It was not the best time in my life, personally or professionally. I would soon leave California for Massachusetts. My experience in Hollywood left me bitter, alone and I had no release, that is until I saw a link on the Drudge Report about a new website called Men’s News Daily. Black History Month required a response that no one (I saw) was giving, so I submitted an op-ed to MND. To my surprise, it was posted. A week later, its editor emailed me asking “Do you have any more?” Since that day ten years ago, venting has brought many new and lasting friends, created opportunities (good and bad), and I hope has shared information not readily found but informative and/or entertaining.

With the guilty verdict of Mohammad Shafia, his wife Tooba Yahya, and their son Hamed of what were clearly honor killings, there are some still living by that “honor” and being quite reluctant to call it what it was because they are not to be or feel offended.

Samira Kanji, president of the Noor Cultural Centre in Toronto, warned against “focusing unduly” on offended honor as the motive for the slaying of the four women and girls, saying that “honor or not, it’s a murder and it’s going to be treated as murder” by the courts. She claimed that the slayings are a breach of Islamic ethics, while she criticized the judge presiding in the case for having said that the verdict is a clear transmission of “Canadian values.” She said, “I don’t think the value of life is uniquely Canadian or uniquely Western — I think it’s a universal value.” Kanji said. “To that extent, his putting it in those terms was problematic.”

Islamic “ethics” also says it’s okay to lie to the kufar, thus Ms. Kanji’s words are problematic as well.
