Easy to build a building quickly from pre-fab, and if they did their engineering correctly it *should* withstand a MMI 9 quake.  The technology has gotten better and better over the decades, the only issue is quality control.  QC is the key, and if things are “normal” there in the Great Republic of China, the building will fail. When the Gubmint is involved, things just ain’t quite right, if they work at all…

At the same time, Big Projects in China have a habit of collapsing and killing many people.

Tallyman sort of nailed my concerns about a building built that quickly. What shortcuts did they take? I know for a fact how bad some construction can be, I used to do it. We used to get in fights with the plumbers regularly as countertop installers and as an apprentice electrician, I’d heard horror stories of… well the plumbers, but other groups as well. I truly hope that my concerns are wrong, but I can’t shake the feeling that it’s a disaster in the making.

From Wikipedia:  “The construction was part of an intense competition in New York for the title of “world’s tallest building”. Two other projects fighting for the title, 40 Wall Street and the Chrysler Building, were still under construction when work began on the Empire State Building. Each held the title for less than a year, as the Empire State Building surpassed them upon its completion, just 410 days after construction commenced. The project was completed ahead of schedule and under budget. Instead of taking 18 months as anticipated, the construction took just under fifteen.”     http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Empire_State_Building

We’ve headed downhill since.  The Chinese problem will be its likely venal Communist crony corruption which has led to many bridge collapses.  http://www.nytimes.com/2012/08/25/world/asia/collapse-of-new-bridge-underscores-chinas-infrastructure-concerns.html?_r=2&hp&

Perhaps, our Chairman Barack will be in the first elevator to the top where he can offer the Chinese Communist rapidly built building as an example to his subjects of Communist crony capitalism’s superiority..

Yeah, but do you want to be within half a mile of that building the first time a gale force wind comes along?

      I didn’t build that.
