    Two points: 1) There has been talk of a train to Las Vegas for at least 35 years. It was a notion I first heard while living in Riverside, CA. It was too expensive and undesirable then and I expect the same holds true now. 2) as previously suggested, the liberals are driving up gas prices deliberately to make boondoggles like this this one seem feasible. Triple (at least) the estimated price tag and decrease by half (at least) revenue and the numbers may approach reality.If construction ever starts it’ll be a political decision pure and tainted.

      Never mind the inconvenient fact that ALL high-speed rail systems built all over the world are heavily subsidized, vastly over budget, and have low ridership,

      Never mind that it’s always Gubmint that decides it would be a good idea to build one despite non-biased studies that say they are unworkable economically and the public is not exactly clamoring for them.

      Never mind that the system that decides to build them is corrupt and uses the project as payoffs for political reasons.

      Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead!

    Liberal Progressive guilt over using automobiles is assuaged by building trains.

    Romney will be wonderful telling how bad Obamacare is and how good Romneycare is.

    Where is the feminist Horatio at the bridge? Where are the NOW nags?  Where are VAWA supporters?  The Muslim book sold out and the wave of the future is not being resisted.

    The latest Obama Ad:  A desperate Ms. Fluke look-alike screams, “Help me Barack, make gasoline unaffordable, so that I’ll be driven from my gasoline addiction.”

    Okay, I realise that $5 billion is only a half day worth of current spending – or $2.1 billion of borrowing if you want to look at it that way – but if this sort of thing can’t be stopped with the observation we can’t afford it we may as well plan on the dissolution of the United States.
