Fried food heart risk ‘a myth’
They told us sugar was bad, salt was bad, oil was bad, butter was bad, and at least half of us have had to endure the unpleasant side effects of suggested substitutes. What is it going to take to stop the misinformation that requires us all to alter our diets just to keep the fucking food Nazis off our backs?

    The government tells you what to eat because it loves you.   The University researchers conduct their studies honestly without any bias introduced by the connection between successful grant proposals proposing the correct thing and incorrect proposals challenging the orthodoxy.    It’s the modern Emperor’s New Clothes, where all the pigs at the government trough say what is expected, so the trough stays full.    Bring the good intended politicians into science and you have global warming, Volts, kid’s menus dumped at schools, and the Glorious Queen Michelle to make you eat your cake without sugar or butter or chocolate or taste.  Luckily with this report, maybe the government will still allow me to continue to use all that expensive extra virgin olive oil I buy and those extras I get at the bakery.   I’ve requested a senior’s waiver from Queen Michelle to continue to eat beef and sausage.

    I figure just patting them on their pumpkin heads and calling them cute while I continue to eat the way I want is the best approach.

    Is it time to tell the first vacationer to STFU yet? She’s already been booed by elementary school kids; she and the vacationer-in-chief are “do-as-I-say..”-ers of the first order. Yup, I believe it’s past time.

    Remember back in the late ’70s or early ’80s when it was ordained that “charred or char grilled” food was a direct carcinogen? I’m pretty sure that was where the general populace’s ignoring of these edicts accelerated. I remember the backlash; the vehement statements of “they’ll take my grilled steak, burgers, and chicken from my cold dead hands!!”

    • So shall we recap the recent “discoveries”?
    • Fried food: not as bad as they said.
    • Cholesterol: not as bad as they said.
    • Salt: not as bad…
    • Oats: not particularly beneficial.
    • Second hand smoke: not as bad…

    Why are these pronouncements of doom given any creedence by anyone anymore? It’s just like all the Gore-bull warming crap, the CFC scare, DDT, etc., etc., etc.

    I’m pretty sure I could live a pretty content life if I didn’t have to hear from another “expert” about anything, least of all one employed and/or empowered by the federal government! In fact, maybe I should apply for a grant to study the effect of such experts on the general contentedness of the population, as opposed to a control group of people who where left the hell alone.

    Someone forgot to put the hashbrowns or home fries on the plate. A side of blueberry pancakes with real maple syrup would round that breakfast out nicely!

      C-mom, I’d add a side of cheese grits topped with a pat o’ butter, hot biscuits with red-eye gravy, and don’t forget strawberry jam for the toast.

          Ever tried ‘em? Judge not lest ye’ve tried ‘em. The plain ones with butter are good, but cheese grits are extra yummy!

          Re: the posts of what’s good & bad to eat, my grandparents lived on a farm & drank fresh cow’s milk, they ate bacon, ham, beef & vegetables they grew themselves, and my grandmother cooked with LARD, and made the best biscuits & cornbread this side of the Mississippi. Both lived to age 91.

    Like politics, nutrition has become religion to many people. What many people believe to be a healthy diet is not based on scientific research, but rather based on activist’s beliefs and prejudices.

    Several years ago after having babies and getting older, I found myself obese for the first time in my life. Before I had eaten whatever I wanted and never had a problem. But I decided to learn about nutrition. So I purchased The American Dietetic Association’s Complete Food & Nutrition Guide. It is a huge book which contains all the government recommendations about nutrition. It promotes the Food Pyramid and suggests a low fat, high complex carbohydrate diet. I changed my diet completely and followed all their recommendations. I lost some weight but then hit a wall. I was tired and hungry all the time, irritable, depressed, and even had feelings of paranoia.

    Realizing that something was wrong I starting looking into the science behind the recommendations. Well, to make a long story short—the government recommendations are full of crap. There is no science behind the food pyramid or the low fat diet. In fact several studies have proven the harm and ineffectiveness of these diets, but they keep pushing them because they want them to be true. Vegetarianism is a religion, not a science. I suspect that the recommendation against fried foods was probably based more on bigotry against the South and Southern Cooking, than any study.

    And this is why the government has no business in the healthcare business. They wouldn’t know healthy if it hit them in the face.

      Try looking at the original “Enter the Zone” by Dr. Barry Sears.  LOTS of good science behind the “Balance” or “Zone” diet.

      The Food Pyramid has the same balance between Protein, Carbs and Fat as a Snickers bar.  If that’s all you ate, imagine how you’d feel.

    You are right, eNeecie! Our brains need healthy fats. Low fat just causes children to suffer with  ADD, sometimes seizures,  and leaves adults lethargic.. Anyone recall being given a spoonful of cod-liver oil? It is one of the best remedies for what ails ya!
