I have a little bit of a different take on this. On the surface, it seems that it would be the best PR move to prepare a meal with starstruck, very ill young child. Evidently, the Contessa has given of her time and skills in the past to support other charitable endeavors, and the Make A Wish people refer to her as a “friend” of their organization.
If you dig a little deeper and read about this child’s mother, it appears that she is quite pleased with herself for stirring up such a hornets’ nest of hate toward the Contessa. She comes across as acting as if she and her son are “entitled” to the attentions of whatever celebrity they deem fit to serve their needs. Her blog is actually kinda creepy. Plus, she drug TMZ into all this to add to the “measured” coverage of the situation.
Although the better part of valor is to help those in need, when is enough enough? How many requests for charitable contributions must celebrities fulfill before they are allowed to say no? The way this family has behaved towards the Contessa in contacting the media seems at best bullying and at worst extortion.
I’m not saying the Contessa made the right decision in choosing not to fulfill this wish. I’m saying that it is HER choice. This obviously needy family’s attitude of entitlement and their publicity quest to seek revenge for this sleight against their son does not sit well with me.

That is an entirely legitimate question to ask. If her popularity depends exclusively on the “goodwill” of an adoring population, then her career will suffer for this slight; otherwise, it is her life first and foremost. She has a job to do; but, extracurricular events are at her discretion. I’m certain all people would agree with this sentiment. No one wants to be directed in their personal life.
