Teachers union boss takes in $428K, demands shared sacrifice
I’m glad a nationally-recognized newspaper is jumping on this. Our local representatives went to a state-wide meeting of the MEA a couple years ago and immediately ticked off the bosses by asking how big a raise they gave themselves. There was no reply to that. But the low-rung members managed to kill a proposal to have all members pay for the weekly groceries and utilities of striking workers. I kid you not. Teachers in my district have NEVER gone on strike, have taken concessions, etc. But well-paid teachers in larger districts were expecting us to foot the bill if they decided to strike – even though their starting pay was the same as a 15-year veteran in our district.
BTW I think there is a place for unions in schools. I don’t want to go back to non-union days when the highest-paid teachers happened to be related to school board members or teachers were let go for flunking a factory-owner’s son. Or right now in right-to-work states where teachers are expected to visit students’ homes after school, to work through lunch, and to accept if an administrator goes over their heads to change grades for politically-connected students. But having full-time lobbyists and high-paid presidents has nothing to do with preventing teacher burn-out or inequitable work conditions. And the union didn’t stop Michigan legislators for enacting laws to make teachers pay 3% of their salaries to a medical fund to subsidize existing state retirees or to link teacher pay to students’ test scores.

If they want kids to eat better, they should focus on FRUIT instead of veggies. It’s more expensive, but kids will eat fruit salads. If they want to add veggies, the cooks can move to “bowls” like our school has. A Mexican bowl is like a taco in a bowl, but with less chips and more veggies. An Asian bowl has lean chicken, rice, and lots of veggies.

We already know that people who knowingly hire or rent to illegal aliens can’t be prosecuted, so I’m guessing that the DREAM Act will include that you can’t discriminate in educational or employment opportunities on the basis of residency.

Exactly. This is what burns me about the Big People (as opposed to us Little People): They have no problem making a sacrifice, so they support everyone else being compelled to do it. I have friends who shut off water pipes to the upstairs and closed off every room except the common areas around the kitchen because winter is coming and they aren’t poor enough for utility assistance. I’d like everyone who supports higher taxes to “punish” evil users of fuel oil and coal-generated electricity to be forced to sleep in their livingroom all winter long (with their children and/or staff sleeping in the diningroom).
