On the topic of climate change prediction:

But what causes climate change and is it possible to predict future climate change? New research from the Niels Bohr Institute at the University of Copenhagen shows that it may be due to an accumulation of different chaotic influences and as a result would be difficult to predict.
Chaos theory would inform of a behavior envelope, which would depend on initial conditions for the system. However, the analysis will only be as credible as the characterization of the system.
The scientists with integrity must admit what they know, don’t know, and are incapable of knowing. The only reason the Earth’s system is described as “chaotic,” is because it is incompletely characterized. Even if all the processes were understood, both terrestrial and extraterrestrial, there would still be the question of modeling the system in sufficient detail to ensure accuracy (the reason for their use of multi-million dollar super computers). For now, and for the foreseeable future, that ability remains unattainable by humans, even their mortal gods. In fact, there is no reason to believe that the system will ever by completely characterized, since we don’t know if we know all the possible states and transitions. At best we will have models that increasingly conform to known conditions. We may even, one day, replace the “quantum” model with a deterministic successor; but, that day is not forthcoming.
The real question should be, how do we manage risk, and what reasonable measures of mitigation do we pursue. As with our withdrawal of combat forces from Iraq, the answer should be specified in terms of criteria, and not definitive dates or mandates. As with our presence in Iraq, we should review what we do know, do not know, and are incapable of knowing. The topic of risk management is not for fanatics to engage in.
