‘Mass. Legislature approves plan to bypass Electoral College’
I have had second thoughts on this. I would favor direct election if there were a requirement that the winner gain 55% of the popular vote; IOW, a simple plurality would be insufficient. That would have thrown the last 5 elections into runoffs. I know it’s inconvenient, but it makes people pay attention. It might also make the GOP pick its candidates a little more carefully.
Also, I would favor a provision that all eligible electors (that’s you and I) be *required* to vote, except for those incapacitated by illness, the mentally infirm and non-English speakers.
Shoot, I hope Nov 2nd he has an even WORSE day…
Oh, no no no, Bob, it’s lurking under the water somewhere, according to some “experts”.
A lot of people don’t have a clue what’s in crude; the volatiles, the gooey stuff (tar), etc., so they don’t realize that the chemical reactions (evaporation, cracking of the oil by UV from the sun, interaction with the seawater, etc.) are going to break things down. Last time I checked, oil is less dense than water, therefore it floats. The volatiles evaporate, some of the oil is cracked by the sun, the rest turns into tarballs and sink to slowly dissolve on the bottom of the sea floor. I wish some of these so-called “experts” were exactly that…
Tango. (Still a little pricey, but that’s because we have not reached mass production yet.)

‘Mass. Legislature approves plan to bypass Electoral College’
The ironic twist on this is that if the Republican ticket got just barely over half of the popular votes, Mass would be required to cast all of its electoral vote for that ticket.
Hoist on their own petard!
I’m a bit surprised not to see something on the death of Jack Tatum. Did you think the Darryl Stingley hit was dirty?
@Igor – Re: electric carss – I looked into this area a couple of years ago, when gas was so high. The problem with the Tango, and many of the other EVs is that their small size would prevent many basic trips. For example, my wife and I are in a band. We have a gig downtown, less than 5 miles away, an ideal trip for an EV. The two of us and my bass and amp wouldn’t fit in most EVs.
I love the idea of the Volt. The series hybrid, which it is, makes the most sense to me. It is in the body style of a relatively standard sedan, can carry my entire family and extra stuff. While I agree that mass production and acceptance are the keys to this being affordable, are there really that many people who have enough money to be on that particular cutting edge, especially nowadays?
@BRFan I would never give Tatum a mention, not to mention an RIP precisely because of the Stingley hit and his subsequent brag book “I Am Assassin”.

Of course, since the election of the President of the United States is not a popularity contest, this whinge is utterly irrelevant — the president is not the President of the Americans, but rather of the federal Union of American States.
On the rapidly disappearing oil on the waters of the Gulf: Still Hyperventilating
PB-in-AL, two words: Trailer hitch.
We’ve already thought of that. This is a PURE ELECTRIC car, none of that hybrid crap, so If you want to go farther than the batteries can take you, you can tow a generator package. A *small* geneerator package. If you need to carry stuff too large for the passenger compartment, you can tow a SMALL trailer.
This is a *commuter* vehicle, designed for stop-and-go traffic, getting to and from work. Unless the battery technology gets MUCH better, this is its primary function. For long trips I’ll still drive my SHO.
We even have a trailer hitch on the front. You’ll never guess why…
Igor
@Igor – I’ve seen some of the trailing generator designs, forget exactly where. How much juice does your Tango require from a generator to keep going? Is that just to continue to move or is it enough to recharge the batteries while under way?
I understand the “commuter” vehicle point, but for those who only have one vehicle, the point is moot. Also, what I described going to my band’s gig is basically a commute to work.
I had thought of converting my Mazda 323 to electric. Unfortunately it would cost 10 to 12k. Well, even at our relatively cheap kWhr rates, that’s a LOT of gas and/or a decent used car. Pragmatism, in this case, had to outweigh conservationist inclination.
@Igor – after re-reading my posts, please understand that I’m not trying to be negative. I think an EV would be a great application. I’m an ideal candidate, less than 5 miles one way to work, not much running around aside from the commute. I just feel that the economics haven’t quite made it yet.
If we were to invest in nuclear power generation more, then the issues of “carbon footprint” and peak load would be reduced if not possibly eliminated. Electricity should then become even cheaper, after the initial build-out.
I like the idea of an EV, no oil to futz with, relatively quiet. We’ll see.
Keep the electoral college, otherwise “flyover country” won’t matter to politicians.
PB-in-AL, 8.3 KW to run on flat level ground at 40mph. 23KW if you are climbing Pikes Peak (we assume worst-case when we are doing these calculations).
The batteries carry a smidge over the energy equivalent of 1/2 a gallon of gas. 40-60 mile range, which makes the “mpg” at 80 to 120 miles/gallon. Right now we are doing everything we can to reduce rolling resistance. Forget about dynamic braking, it’s a joke – batteries can dish it out, but can’t take it – i.e., you can only charge them at 4-10 amps (Steady State) but you can draw 500 CCA for about 30 seconds before the battery blows up.
Cars like these are ideal for commuting, and the trailer makes it easy to haul around gear. Again, we’ve thought out all these little details.
Wish I could sit around with you and bounce ideas and stats (real-world, NOT the EPA crap) about the ICE, the Hybrid, and the pure electric. Engineering is what makes the world go ’round!
Igor
Thing is, if you’re commuting 5 miles each way, how much gas is that? And compare the cost of that gas vs the extra you’d pay for the electric car, and the power to charge it.
The cost-benefit ratio is WORSE the shorter your commute.
