Severe weather causes power outages across Western Massachusetts
Shortly after driving through New York City, there was the ominous, distant light show. We eventually were caught in the storm, complete with respectable lightning, rain and high wind.
After eight hours of driving, we were 16 miles from home when we notice a lot of leafage, small logs and branches on the road. It was then we hit our first official tree and power line-clearing roadblock.
We spent the next 90 minutes (after being told by two separate police officers that we wouldn’t make it home) serpentining downed power and cable television lines, branches, took dirt roads found on the GPS that were eventually blocked by fallen trees before arriving in our hometown that was barely touched.

Bob and Son’s Awesome Road Trip Adventure…
I’m just thanking the Lord ya’ll managed to find safe passage, Bob.
Would not be denied.
Holy smokes Bob- that was some trip, and homecoming!
Glad you arrived safely, and hope you have a wonderful Memorial Day weekend.
God Bless our Troops!
Glad you guys managed to avoid being in the worst of the storm!
While I agree that the Virginia ticket thing is pretty crappy, the update shows that it was repealed in 2008, the original article being published in 2007. However, if they were willing to do something so egregious when things were only “sorta’ rough” financially, what’s on tap for now?! (my apologies if that was the point you were trying to make, only had 1/2 a cup of coffee)
???
I live in Virginia — and it is my understanding that the bill requiring those draconic payments as a tax on a ticket were REPEALED already.
http://www.thenewspaper.com/news/22/2294.asp
That is the last link in the story Bob posted here. The repeal.
Or am I missing something?
About speeding in VA — IF you stay with flow of traffic, don’t drive erratically or weave lanes, etc. — the VA State Police typically don’t pull over people doing about 70mph or so, even in areas marked at a lower speed limit, although they can, should they choose, of course, I’ve noticed that they tend to reserve that one for certain drivers that “stick out” in an unsafe manner. Seems that ~80mph is the area where they will indeed pull people over. So there’s a bit of leeway and common sense being applied anyway.
YMMV
Sorry, I posted the before and didn’t include the after. One of my co-workers put an APB out yesterday for a traffic attorney. This was why.
NJ Teacher who complained to Gov. Chris Christie she deserved $83k actually makes $86k

First, I laughed.
When Wilson, who has a master’s degree, said she was not being compensated for her education and experience
So, she believes compensation should be commensurate with the level of arrogance, and not the work performed. Interesting.
Then I laughed again.
Christie said: “Well, you know then that you don’t have to do it.” Some in the audience applauded.
Then I applauded.
“Your union said that is the greatest assault on public education in the history of the state,” Christie said. “That’s why the union has no credibility, stupid statements like that.”
Christie exposes the bureaucracy.
Then I applauded anew and called for an encore!
Christie is brilliant. If only other civil servants were equally concerned about their constituents, despite coping with the heavy burden of an ever looming bureaucratic nightmare.
This story reminds me of some of the highest paid “teachers” in a district (RI) with some of the highest student failure rates in the country. This can only happen in America, or another nation with a similarly corrupted system — of which they are the rule, unfortunately.
Australia’s Victorian government creates seminar to “deal with denialism”
Yup, it’s AGW/AGCC rearing its ugly head again. The “elites” should focus on their supporters’ denial of reality; but, where’s the profit in that.
They still haven’t demonstrated to what extent anthropogenic CO2 affects the Earth’s system, let alone established that climate change is anomalous. They have also failed to account for other anthropogenic effects, and they have certainly failed to qualify and quantify natural effects.
The only ones in denial, are the ones whose profits and reputations have been undermined by their advocacy of selective science and misguided policies. They probably need super-super-duper-super computers to replace their aging super-duper-super computers. Their models just seem to exhibit poor correlation with reality, let alone a dependence.
They would be well advised to review their policies and expected adverse outcomes, in light of their poorly supported speculation. They also don’t seem to be particularly good managers of risk. Maybe they should take some time off, and hire some qualified people to provide oversight of humanity’s affairs. They just are not that bright, and not the best, as they would mislead us to believe.
This is the same party that (lately) has managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. These linguini-spined herdbeasts insist on treating the President with “respect” when he clearly deserves NONE. We are going to have to turn these thick-skulled and thick-hide dinosaurs out to pasture. Quickly.

n.n, a government “body” is the only form of life that has multiple arms, heads, legs, and stomachs, but no brain.
Igor
Igor:
Funny guy. The brain cells are far and few between, where their expansive spread causes the organism to be effectively dumb. This is actually a good thing, until a parasite invades the body, and attempts to manipulate its resources for power and profit.
On the selective application and rejection of laws front:
Scholarship to go to illegal immigrants
Since the content of their character is lacking, they probably do not comprehend the danger in following the path of selectivity.
The moral of the story is: Do the crime when people without integrity will support your “cause”.
This perspective is actually becoming quite prevalent in our society. There are criminals and there is policy. The two should never mix.
On the education on faith front:
To teach or not to teach? Global warming petition sparks debate at school board meeting
“What I saw with these petitions was a motivation to introduce politics into the science classroom and I think that does harm to children, to the community, and the country,” says Alward. “We have people who don’t like some of the policy implications that are being proposed [because of global warming] and they attack science.”
He probably does not like to talk about evolutionary “missing links”, alternative origins of “fossil fuels” (i.e., abiotic), the “big bang” speculation with dark matter (i.e., “missing link”) (according to some, it is not fraud, just fudge), AGW/AGCC noncompliance (i.e., sometimes nature is an inconvenient actor), and likely other truths which they hold to be self-evident. And yet, they are still taught as fact. They should at least blowup the small print and clarify the requisite disclosures on any matters of faith which masquerade as science.
Disclosure: Some matters of selective science may yet be proven true, but that is unlikely to occur in the foreseeable future. As for the speculation of simian heritage, the atheists and faux agnostics shouldn’t hold their breath. There is a lot of correlation being spread around, but very little evidence to support the propaganda.
It’s amazing how many seemingly intelligent people unquestioningly accept these “truths”. It’s almost as if these “educators” desire to design stupid and submissive.
The Significance of Climate Model Agreement: A Guest Post by Ryan Meyer
We have three basic recommendations related to the independence problem:
1. Climate modelers should be wary of overselling results based on model agreement.
2. The climate science community should begin to better address the independence problem.
3. Science policy decision makers should take this problem into account when building strategies for climate modeling, and climate science more broadly.
This would be a good start for science to reclaim its mantle of objectivity. However, while point 2 would be a necessary step, it is still insufficient. Ultimately, the only test that matters, would be for models to comply in greater order with reality. It is unlikely that they will ever achieve dependence (with the current model for our physical realm), but an increasing correlation would likely produce greater meaningful, and useful, outcomes for the advancement of civilization.
Be sure to watch “Squirrel attacks fifth dentist” for your laugh of the day. This is why there is no consensus. I would assume that the squirrel represents the skeptics, and the dentists represent the lemmings. Beware the people with critical thinking skills. They will invariably undermine any position taken by contemporary flat-Earthers and their financial interests.

speaking of health care, I have bad news..but what ELSE is new?
Pelosi to Aspiring Musicians: Quit Your Job, Taxpayers Will Cover Your Health Care
dependency 101…
Nicolas:
dependency 101
It starts with our parents; but, unlike the people advocating for “redistributive change”, our parents actually had to provide for their own needs and desires. It is easy to be benevolent, when you are redistributing other people’s resources. Not to mention that our wealth is a product of our labor, and use of coercion to confiscate our wealth is awkwardly reminiscent of past efforts for involuntary exploitation of labor for profit. There has to be a limit to this compromise, and the liberals have overstepped the line of reasonable shared risk.
If the liberals truly believe in “redistributive change”, then I would suggest they lead by example. Once that happens, and it hasn’t yet, then I may consider following them into submission… or maybe not. Still, it is their reputation on the line. It is time for the liberals to put up or shut up. Their deflection of responsibility, not to mention their shear hypocrisy, sabotages any credibility that they may have ever possessed.

re: climate model… better address the independence problem
From the author:
Two models are independent if they do not share all the same assumptions. No two GCMs are identical, so in that sense they are all independent to some degree.
The trickier question, then is how to know whether two models are sufficiently independent from one another to justify increased confidence based on their agreement.
That’s actually not a bad criteria to assume the effectiveness of consensus. I would describe it as competing interests, by way of assumption. In the case of a system which is incompletely characterized, where the evidence is not definitive, and arguments can be inconclusive, it does provide for a way to avoid stalling. While this may be interesting in academia, and notably politics, it is still a stretch to use scientific observation borne of such a consensus to draft policy. This must be why more scientists of integrity and policy advisors are encouraging creation of realistic policies, in case nature does not comply with their consensus. This is the “better safe than sorry” approach to risk management.
As for Gore and friends in the carbon trading community, and Big Green at large, they are merely the profiteers in this scenario, not unlike the financial system gamblers who have been condemned by the principal creators/enablers of our present crises (also gamblers).
So much deception and obfuscation, but the truth emerges just enough so that we can, hopefully, hold them accountable. I think the more independents we have competing in theses scenarios, the more likely we will be able to hold any one interest in check, if it ever becomes necessary, and maintain a balance which is equitable to all parties. The value of independence is not exclusive to statistics and models.
re: principal creators/enablers of our present crises (also gamblers)
It’s almost as if we were set up so that they can prove a point — an ideological point. They fail to understand that the vast majority must submit (the so-called mandate), and that human nature must be forever quashed, in order for their totalitarian utopia to be realized. Of course, the managers and their supporters will be exempt from this manipulation, and with good reason, since they are providing a much needed service to humanity (whether we like it or not).
As an optimist, I can’t help but think that the left-wing is being manipulated in furthering the various “elitist” agendas. Hopefully, as Russia following the collapse of the communist regime, America will also have a rich benefactor to help them through their correction. As for the compromised people, they will remain a longer term problem.
Driving privilege cardholders turned away from concert
Driving privilege cardholders turned away from concert
Someone made an insightful remark on the message board:
If they have a so-called “driving privilege card” (which is specifically designed to serve illegal alien invaders), then they are no longer undocumented, but merely criminals resident in a sovereign nation.
Who is enabling and supporting these criminals?
“There’s a growing sentiment in Utah that the state of Utah shouldn’t be providing any privileges to illegal aliens,” said Sen. Curt Bramble, R-Provo.
Reality is finally making some headway in the mostly conservative Utah. I would like to thank all regressives, whether liberal or liberal-lite (the so-called “progressive”), for exposing the corruption while in pursuit of their progressive totalitarian dreams. None of this would have been possible, without your insane fanciful narratives, and your well financed mobs wearing on people’s patience. Not to mention selecting an unrepentant Marxist (rationalizer of involuntary exploitation) to represent your interests, and a bunch of morons (who could never pass for Americans) to aid and abet him.
Yup, Obama may have been just what America needed. Our civil servants have been wallowing in the prevailing winds for far too long. It’s time for them to take a clear stand on their principles.
Suspension of Two Broward Teachers & Atheism in the Class
In order to preserve the integrity and value of secular education, the atheist (and faux agnostic) doctrines of faith must be removed from publicly subsidized education. While they are interesting in the course of philosophical ponderings, they act as obstructions when coping with reality, especially when they subvert the true spirit of science.
