  1. Bob says:

The closest I ever was to a battleship was when the Missouri came up along side the Midway in the late 80s. It may have been the Indian Ocean, memory’s not clear on that one.

  2. BRFan says:

With the Iowa class battleships: Iowa, New Jersey, Wisconsin and Missouri, the armor could be as thick as over 17″ in some spots and as thin as 3.9″ in others. With today’s technology, anti-ship missiles could be computer programmed to hit the weakest parts of the ship.

I do believe you are right about the penetrating power of the Exocet but I’m sure there would be other missiles capable of causing serious damage.

I wonder if Bob ever served or has been on a battleship. I toured the Wisconsin during Fleet Week one year and visited the New Jersey at her current home as a museum. Beautiful ships but past their time.

  3. Mauser says:

The funny thing is, I understand that the armor on the old Battleships is so thick (17″??) that an Exocet will pretty much bounce off.

  4. BRFan says:

“Marine Vets Denounce Naming Battleship for John Murtha”

Bob, I’m surprised being ex-navy you didn’t catch this. There are no more battleships left anywhere in any navy. The US got rid of their last one’s in the early 90′s. All the other navy’s ditched their’s back in the 50′s. They are beautiful ships but so out of date.

The Murtha ship is a amphibious transport dock.

One of the last US battleships, the Iowa, is currently near San Francisco. From what I understand San Francisco doesn’t want it because of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”.

Every year there’s some story about a battleship in the news. As soon as I see that, I know the reporter doesn’t know anything about the navy.

  5. Bob says:

    @ Nicholas
Some things have been around before you were born…

    Mind melds

A “mind-meld”, is a technique for sharing thoughts, experiences, memories, and knowledge with another individual. It usually requires physical contact with a subject, though instances of mind-melds without contact have been seen (for example, in the episode “The Devil in the Dark”). Vulcans can perform mind melds with members of most other species, most notably Humans, with Jonathan Archer being the first known Human participant in such a ritual in 2154. Even the Earth Humpback Whale can be successfully melded with.
    — Wiki

Spock got people to do things they normally wouldn’t do with the use of the Vulcan mind meld.

  6. Nicolas says:

nobody will forget the joke of RomneyCare and all, but Bob, I believe you have your sci-fi terms switched. think you were looking for “jedi mind trick”, which is basically what obama did to america to get elected

  7. n.n says:

    Nick M:

    On or off the course?

I didn’t read the article, but I would assume that the “performance enhancing” drugs were Viagra or similar.

    re: activity not a sport

I would like to add “table tennis”, formerly known as ping-pong, to the list of games which should not be recognized as athletic competitions. What’s next, marbles? Oh, never mind, curling is already an Olympic sport.

  8. Nick M says:

Tiger? PEDs? I’m not sure about that one. How could that help one’s golf game? Many golfers have undergone lasik surgery, is that not performance enhancing?

Also, I’m sorry if I offend anyone, but golf is an activity not a sport. Golfers are not athletes. However, there are athletic golfers and I believe Tiger fits in that category.

  9. Ilion says:

Bill Maher Calls Rush Limbaugh ‘The Louis Farrakhan of White People’

Ah! So there is something unsavory about Farrakhan, and it does have something to do with race.

  10. n.n says:

    re: oil spill

The “environmentalists” are only concerned about the environment, so far as their concern increases their profits. Their support of “cap and trade”, their narrow focus on CO2 to to the exclusion of all other possible contributing factors, only serves to confirm their true nature. The left-wing lunatics are primarily concerned with profit. Their interest in Marx’s rationalization of enslavement, is that their principle motive is to control those parts of the economy which are most profitable to them and their supporters — that is socialism. If at all possible, they would prefer not to compete. In fact, their goal is to promote a system where their power, wealth, and prestige is guaranteed by design. The left-wing lunatics are remnants of yesteryear’s regressive systems.

This oil spill shows our addiction is madness — it is time to act

They have not wasted anytime in protecting their interests. Will they be able to control and manipulate the people’s perceptions?

Oil Spill a Catastrophe of Monumental Proportions: Is It Sabotage?

With the credibility of AGW/AGCC flailing in the wind, the timing of this disaster is more than a little suspicious. Even worse, there was no cause for concern, no contributing factors, before the sudden failure.

Democrats Reframe the Debate on Immigration

All illegal alien invaders from Central and South America, Europe, Africa, Asia, etc., should be deported. Otherwise, there are hundreds of millions of people from around the world who would love a free pass to America. There are also hundreds of millions of Americans who would love to selectively reject one law or another.

The liberal/progressive agenda is the stuff of an anarchist’s dreams.

Judging from the polls, there will be a new group of Uncle Tomases to scorn

The people who advocate for the illegal alien invaders are the ones who profit from their status. The so-called “civil rights” businesses, have failed to conceive a new business model to increase or maintain their revenue. The people who have risen to the challenge of liberty, are too heavily invested in their nation to support its subversion, and, as a result, a new patriot is born every day.

No place to go for moderates as US heads to extremes

The problem with “moderates”, is that they have yet to decide whether the original compromise was sufficient, or if they are willing to move progressively to a totalitarian system. They cannot continue to follow the prevailing winds. It is past time for people to decide what they are willing to sacrifice. Will they choose progressive involuntary exploitation or recognize their individual dignity and support classical liberalism and/or its conservative extension?

    Government Greed

Is it prejudiced to believe that the people in government are no different than any other people?
