Before you ask what kind of self-medication I’ve discovered, let me preface this by reminding people I, among other things, am a political tactician. I lived in dark blue Massachusetts where Democrats not only made sport of standing on the necks of the super-minority Republicans, but attempting to squeeze the remaining life out of them. I know how they think and I know what will happen if health care reform is defeated.
The GOP has the cover of being 100% against this bill, so they are relatively safe come November.
Should health care reform be defeated, Democrats will first blame an out-of-power Republican minority, attempt a few faux mea culpas, tell the American people they “get it” and will hope the majority of Americans forgive-and-forget come November. The primary energy of Democrats will go towards keeping control of the House and Senate.
Let’s be real; if they maintain control, do you really think they won’t have learned the errors of their ways and attempt health care again (with a new “mandate”), this time quicker and more forceful with a fresh two years of pad?
I say let the Democrats have this victory.
Democrats will subsequently incur the wrath of the American people. Town meetings this summer will require Dems to arrive with armed escort, if they’re brave enough to hold them at all. Knowing incrementalist Democrats as we do, they’ll keep ramming unpopular legislation through after passage of health care, infuriating the public beyond the point of redemption.
On the other side, every Republican running this fall will do so on a “Repeal the Bill” platform. Should the GOP retake the House and Senate, that should happen.
November will give new meaning to the political term “bloodbath”. Democrats could be out of power for the foreseeable future, and in 2012, we will see Obama leave in disgrace.
While we all know how disastrous this health care reform will be, I’ve also learned a few things from sadistic Massachusetts Democrats: once you have your foot on the neck of the opposition, press down until they stop breathing. Because of their arrogance, we have golden opportunity to let the Democrats destroy themselves.
I think we should let them do it.

I’m with ya, Bob – let them pass it and watch them self-destruct, just like they always do.
Agree with Nicolas & The Machine on Catherine – turn off the caps lock. It burns my retinas.

SOROS ANYONE????
I guess my belief in letting the bill pass is based on the my understanding (which may be wrong) that the Bill would not survive a Supreme Court challenge. If this is not true, then yes, it definitely should be killed. Because everyone it right–getting politicians to repeal anything is pretty much impossible–unless normal people run for office pledging to do nothing else but kill the bill and come home.
It would just be nice if the Dems could just kill themselves with this bill. When Obama won, I felt sad that the first black president would probably go down in infamy rather than someone we could be proud of. But I thought it would be ironic justice if the slavery party was finally taken down by a true African/American.
Hell, Machine. There was a tax on phones that had been levied to help pay for the Spanish-American War. And i think it was finally repealed a couple years ago. Government does not believe in a temporary anything.
Those who believe that politicians will repeal or take back anything that they’ve done to enlarge government and take from the people should study the reason why we still pay Federal Income Tax.
It was supposed to be a *temporary* tax to get the country through World War ONE.
Um, is the Kaiser dead yet?
The difference here is that this new “entitlement” cannot be sustained, people will not receive the promised benefits. We will not feel as if we are losing something.
Unsustainable as it may be, Social Security has over the years provided a tangible benefit to people. So have other “third rail” entitlements.
This bill provides nothing nothing but grief.
If passed it will be repealed because it will cause real hardship, people will demand it be repealed.
Bob, you make excellent points, but there is an underlying assumption I want to challenge. It is that the winning Republicans will have the political will and courage to do what is right. As we have seen, those traits are in woefully short supply.
It can’t be allowed to pass.
1 – Even if the Republicans take back both the Senate and House, they’ll never muster enough votes to override a veto by Obama. To do that will require regaining the presidency. Even if they do win in 2012, the Democrats could regain either the House or Senate or both. It’ll be a constant cat and mouse game I’d rather not deal with. In the meantime, people will suffer with this crap health care. Immigration reform is up next and if the Republicans play hardball on that (and I hope they do) like they did with this, a lot (not all) of the momentum they built up will be lost as the race card will be played over and over again. It’s not an accident immigration is next. The Democrats see that as an opportunity to somewhat restore their position.
2 – I believe Mark Levin said this, no entitlement program in this country has ever been repealed. What’ll happen is people will scream about it for a while, then they’ll meekly accept it and then they’ll get used to it to the point it’ll be political suicide to even speak of repealing it. From what I’ve been told, people freaked out when Medicare/Medicaid came about. No one will ever dare mention getting rid of them. People have come to accept it. The same will happen if this passes.
It has to be stopped now.
I think Bob is right. It is time to take the slavery party down all the way. Let them pass this bill and we will see it torn apart piece by piece by the Supreme Court. Mark Levin is ready to sue if they use the Slaughter Rule to pass it. This is important because they are talking about using the rule to pass several laws concerning cap and trade and immigration. Texas and several other states are ready to take them to court for violation of the 10th Amendment.
Let them be seen for the thugs and tyrants they are. I think it has always been a disgrace that, after starting a war which almost tore our country just to preserve their stupid way of life that depended on the blood and sweat of slaves, the name of the Democratic Party is not as disgraced as the name of it’s terrorist wing, the KKK. (BTW, I was raised in the South and I know that a lot, if not most, of the people who fought for the Confederacy were fighting for the rights of their states and not slavery. But Jefferson Davis and the other idiot politicians were fighting to preserve their “divine right” to own slaves–read William Bennett’s America: The Last Best Hope.)
We need to get rid of these jerks for good. Then we need to fix the culture that allowed these fascists to thrive so that this never happens again.
Bob –
I certainly hope so, if this sort of language is included. Pissing off Chief Justice Roberts during SOTU may just come back to haunt UhhhBama.
That’ll get challenged, as it’s beyond unconstitutional.

From the Weekly Standard:
http://www.weeklystandard.com/weblogs/TWSFP/2009/12/reid_bill_declares_future_cong_1.asp
And then he pointed out that the Reid bill declares on page 1020 that the Independent Medicare Advisory Board cannot be repealed by future Congresses:
there’s one provision that i found particularly troubling and it’s under section c, titled “limitations on changes to this subsection.”
and i quote — “it shall not be in order in the senate or the house of representatives to consider any bill, resolution, amendment, or conference report that would repeal or otherwise change this subsection.”
this is not legislation. it’s not law. this is a rule change. it’s a pretty big deal. we will be passing a new law and at the same time creating a senate rule that makes it out of order to amend or even repeal the law.
I don’t understand what IT Nerd brought up — it’s not like we live in the days of the Medes and the Persians who had unchangeable laws. I cannot believe that they can pass legislation that makes it illegal to be repealed. I simply cannot believe that. If such is the case, what makes a simple law any different from the Constitution, which requires significant effort to change and have any portion be repealed. Maybe I should just refuse to understand that, because it sounds woefully unconstitutional to me.
However, Bob, I don’t think we should just shut up and let the Dems pass it even if it means they hurt themselves. I think the shenanigans they’ve shown have made a lot of them vulnerable (particularly in the House), whether it passes or not. (My Rep just announced last night that he’s voting against it, but I’m still going to vote against him come November.) However, I don’t know if enough Republicans will have the political willpower to repeal such a bill if it passes, should they gain a majority. What is the history of similar contentious legislation? — after the party that pushed it through was voted out, was it repealed, or was it already ingrained?
well played, Bob. I caught what you were getting at half way through your piece here, that you WANT them to shoot them selves in the foot. VERY well played. Think I’m picking up how you think, more and more these days.
IT definitely brings up a good point – what language IS there, especially after queen bee Pelosi says we’ll see what’s in the bill AFTER they pass it
I see your point, Bob. My concern is potential language in the bill that prevents it from being repealed.
