I don’t know about you, but I think this year I’ll turn everything on, leave for an hour and drive around aimlessly (burning up some good ol’ fossil fuel), while those environmental hypocrites turn off the lights and try to carry on their activities appropriately in the dark.

I wonder what the increase in crime was while the lights were out.
Assholes have no idea how power generation works.
Do they think we are going to go through the long process of shut down of the grid and then the even longer process of bringing it back up again?
In actuality, that would cost *MORE* than just letting it run — and likely end up making more of that terrible awful carbon diosxide they are so afraid of.
Me, I wouldn’t go out in the vehicle, I’d stay home and schedule anything that consumed massive amounts of electrical power, safe in the knowledge that there won’t be any brownouts happenin’ tonight.
Good time to do some arc weldin’…
Or maybe test the homebrew Atom Smasher.
I’d turn up the thermostat, but I’m on Oil Heat, so there’s not much I could contribute to Gore-bull Warming.
When are these idiots going to realize they could make a large contribution to Society by simply killing themselves? The rest of us just don’t care…
However, Tax & Fade (Cap & Trade) will go a loooong way towards reducing energy consumption. That is, until the Conservatives get back to running things…

Sheeple! They deserve Agenda 21.
Like the man said, the generators continued to run (with output going to ground and the sheeple increased pollution by burning candles and lanterns). As a non-smoker I could actually smell it.
They caused incredible waste by this act and the emissions from the candles and lanterns should have been measurable.
Here in North Western Ontario we have 2 coal burning plants which the liberal gov’t. have closed in an attempt to lower carbon dioxide emissions.
The plants are being converted to run on pellets made from wood chips and peat-moss.
I suspect not a lot of thought went into this idea but then liberals – democrats ………same thing.
Silly me, I thought the combustion of wood and peat-moss yielded carbon dioxide plus some actual interesting pollutants.
These people might just turn me into a regressive anarchist.
Man, you are just trying to make our heads explode, aren’t you, Bob.
This is what drives me insane. I have been a conservationist all my life–not an environmentalist.
Environmentalists are people who have lived in the city their entire life and have no idea what the word environment means. They watched Bambi and Babe too many times and believe that animals can think and feel like humans. I’m sure some of them believe that they can talk too.
In high school I was a member of: The National Audubon Society, Sierra Club, Greenpeace, The Nature Conservancy, and The Cousteau Society. And those were just the groups I was official members. I also contributed occasionally to the World Wildlife Fund and other groups. You see, I had this naïve belief that they just liked animals and wanted to preserve as much natural land as feasible, not pollute, and not waste resources. Silly me, I thought that Greenpeace really wanted to save the whales.
However, while I was in college in the eighties, it became clear to me that they had a totally different agenda. The Sierra Club started rallying against private property in the West. Greenpeace seemed to forget about whales completely and began calling for a worldwide ban on chlorination in water. It didn’t matter if this would result in unsafe water supplies and possibly kill millions of people. In fact, killing people seemed to be a goal of many of these groups, and it still is to this day. More and more socialist propaganda showed up in the magazines. I cancelled all my memberships and had to face the hard fact that I had been duped.
So I was on to these folk by the time they started rallying against CFCs. They had more success with that campaign because they got corporate support from DuPont which just happened to hold a patent for a CFC-free Freon substitute. You notice now that the CFC ban has passed we never hear about the ozone hole even though there has been no change. And of course the reason there has been no change is mostly likely due to the fact that the hole is not only natural but necessary.
So, I never fell for the whole global warming scheme because it was just the latest of several campaigns against capitalism and human beings. However, I have been shocked at how successful this movement has been.
I understand why it has been promoted so much. There is astronomically more opportunity for making money and for increasing government than any of the previous frauds, but this one is so easily shot down. I mean, the CFC argument was a little complicated and you could easily confuse people. But saying the world is getting warmer now than it has ever been? What kid hasn’t seen all the pictures of dinosaurs walking in lush forests with ferns the size of palm trees? And of course the climate changes. Just this weekend we dug up a fossilized sea shell in our backyard—and I live in North Texas. I can believe how gullible people are.
But the frustrating part of this is that because of global warming, people are making good changes. You should try not to pollute. Recycling of some materials such as aluminum, glass, and, in some cases, paper is good. Trying to be less wasteful and use less energy is a good thing because it lowers demand and thus lowers prices for everyone. I would hate to see these things go away once people realize that AGW is a fraud.
But I guess it would be worth losing these benefits to get rid of this lie. People are starving to death because the US is burning one third of the world’s food supply for ethanol. Untold thousands of birds are killed each year because of wind farms. The toxic wastes produced in the manufacture of the batteries needed for hybrid and electric cars are far more dangerous than the emissions produced by a normal car.
This whole turn out the light thing is so stupid, on so many levels I don’t know where to begin. As The Machine pointed out, they will use more energy than they save. And why do it at night? If you want to save energy, why not encourage people to use more natural light. That way you won’t have people lighting all those candles and making more CO2—not that it makes any difference.
I could go on but I will stop. This whole thing has been driving me crazy and it is really amazing to me how these folks are getting more hysterical about this even as the whole science has finally been exposed as the complete fraud it has always been. I guess truth has no bearing in Bambi Land.
It’s not about what they are doing; it’s about how they FEEL when they do it.
It’s like doing a good deed for the accolades instead of doing it because it’s the right thing to do.
As both Rich and eNeecie both aptly pointed out, the hypocrisy of all the candles burning just makes me laugh, except for the fact that these people actually believe this crap.
eNeecie – I’m with you pragmatic conservation is what we should live by. These knuckleheads want nothing less than the complete demise of the human species, except of course for themselves. morons.
@Machine – “…Or maybe test the homebrew Atom Smasher.” You got a flux capacitor to go with that?
Thanks for reminding me about this Bob. There’s a light in the back yard that needs replaced. Come Earth Hour, my lil’ piece of Ohio will be glowing!
For thousands of years mankind has struggled against the dark. I cringe to see these people cheering the lights going out. It reminds me of the end of Atlas Shrugged.
eNeecie is very wise to have gained such insight at a relatively early age in life.
The mention of the whales reminds me of a statement from 40 years ago of some guy I met in Trinidad that told me he had speared a Bottle-nosed Dolphin (think Flipper) while diving for other species to sell in the local market. I was somewhat upset when I asked him why he would do such a thing. 15 cents a pound in the local market was his reply. People gotta eat and animal protein is highly desirable when you have limited income.
A recent article in the Wall Street Journal reported that in the 1960s scientists estimated there were 5,000 Humpback whales in the world. The current estimate is 60,000. Sounds to me as if it is time to allow renewed and increased hunting of them. Lots of hungry people in the world.
As far as GW (AGW or otherwise) is concerned you’ve got to ask yourself: “Can any human accurately forecast anything so far into the future?”.
I have two teenage boys, and ever since they were old enough to reach a light switch, I’ve been following them around the house, nagging them to turn out the lights when they’re not using them.
I don’t do this to “save the planet”; I do it to manage my monthly electrical utility bill.
Besides, if we all dramatically reduced our electricity usage, the utility companies would react by increasing their rates so they wouldn’t have lower profits.
@eNeecie – Well said!
Bob, I have another example of liberal wackiness – in the dashboard of my Xbox 360 (example), there’s a video advertisement you can watch asking people to go barefoot for one day on April..something, that they mention. I’m just thinking that the whole “solidarity” thing doesn’t work, and that it’s better to send money to kids in poverty stricken countries or send them shoes rather than just a neo-hippy “we’re gonna suffer with you for a day” kind of thing
and holy crap..now there’s a “Nick M” here? great..the confusion will just increase from here on out..
Bunch of hippy Dippy wannabees. Bunch of pagans [no offence to any pagans out there] who want to throw themselves back into the stone age.
When I was a little girl I was always mad because the indians got killed by the cowboys. In young adulthood I got hoodwinked into saying, Give back the land!! but not realizing that history is history and the present is the present. It cannot be turned around. History is full of wars, hostile takeovers, slavery and so on. None of it can be turned around. And neither can a planet with 6+billion humans be turned into a planet with 50 million humans.
so what ultimately is the point of all of this if not a scheme of some kind? That’s what I always wonder….
“I don’t know about you, but I think this year I’ll turn everything on, leave for an hour and drive around aimlessly (burning up some good ol’ fossil fuel), while those environmental hypocrites turn off the lights and try to carry on their activities appropriately in the dark.”
I say do it – take an aimless drive, take some pics of anything interesting you see, and maybe show us what you find
eNeecie:
I had a similar experience. There is nothing to be gained from fanaticism, especially when it is disingenuous. The template they have applied to environmentalism, is the same as for every other agenda. There is an unnatural order to all of their activities.
As for AGW/AGCC, where there were billions invested in CFC-free coolants, there are trillions invested in carbon markets. This particular component of their agenda, will not be dumped anytime soon. Not to mention an unprecedented opportunity to further extort wealth from the people. They are the royal miscreants of modern times.
I once did some research on birth rates in the USA & I found out that when a city has a power failure, the birth rate goes up roughly nine months from the power drop. I don’t think this is a coincidence. When the power goes out there is no TV, Nintendo & not really that much you can do in total darkness except for the fact that making love, having sex or whatever you want to call it is the perfect time for it. No distractions to interfere & it isn’t something you need lights to perform properly. It is especially nice when the moon is high & the mood is set, without setting a certain time aside to enjoy each other. Spontaneity of a power failure has increased populations instead of reducing them. Maybe it doesn’t work that with Liberals, as less of them are having children or maybe more of them are gay. That is something I don’t have clue about, or do I care to know.
Flux caps are for nonexistant Time Machines, man, get with the technology.
Atom Smashers use electromagnetic energy to propel sub-atomic particles to high velocities. Standard electrolytic and glass-foil type capacitors will suffice.
Linear or circular, that is the real question here. I prefer the combinatorial types for the real BIG BANG…
GAZZAP
woah, Mac with the heavy tech-talk, NICE big man!!
Turn off the lights and light a candle, did you reall accomplsih something? Burning a candle maybe they do not really understand what carbon comes from?
Now if we could get then to hold their breath for an hour to lower carbon emissions. }:>
@Machine – I know, I was just taking the opportunity to link to O’Reilly’s auto parts entry for the flux capacitor.
Speaking of capacitors, they make a pretty big boom if you plug the little ones directly into an AC source. Better than firecrackers to surprise someone. Ahh the days of the EE program in college. ;D
Saturdays at 8:30pm I’m usually just hanging @ the house flipping channels for something worth watching. Like RoseRRR I’m often following my daughter around turning lights off. I’ll just maintain my position on the couch for that period and let ‘em burn.
