Family Friendly Redefined

Remember when an NBA Halftime Show was former player analysis and some ordinary Joe trying to hit a half court shot for a million bucks?

Shakira steals the show as she joins Alicia Keys and Usher on stage at basketball game
“David Stern wishes for the NBA to be a global and family friendly enterprise. He will not tolerate any behavior that threatens to alienate a sizeable portion of the league’s fan base.”

As I grew up with Cinemax After Dark, this didn’t burn my eyes, but if sports commissioners are going to keep tight control over their “family friendly” images, then let’s be consistent. We know what Shakira and the girls were simulating (as the lyrics are borderline subtle) and some were oh-so close to that wardrobe malfunction moment.

After 30, there are some things best left to imagination.

I stopped watching right after she did the pole-dance against the bar of her cage. I can only imagine.

Sorry I missed this. I’ve been a big Shakira fan for ages. On the other hand, a lot of her fans have been upset with this latest album, calling it a sell-out, and oversexualized. Some might think that odd for a woman famous for her bellydancing, but if one is familiar with her body of work, it’s mostly about faithful relations (or betrayal) and sometimes introspective about god. This particular song gets clobbered because it’s clearly about being unfaithful.

On the plus side, she’s not lip syncing.

    Shakira:

    Family Friendly? no.

    Sexy as hell? YES!!

I’m not a prude. Just still pissed at the NFL’s treatment of Rush, yet all sports leagues would have us believe they’re non-divisive and family friendly.

I’ll poke holes in that when I can.

BTW, MissJean, once you get past the bit with the cage, the dancing is fairly ordinary dancing. (Especially compared to what she is capable of).

I have a lot of respect for Shakira, not just for her intelligence (a 140 IQ) but one of the first things she did with her royalties when she hit 18 was set up a charity to build schools in Colombia in order to combat poverty and indirectly, FARC. And she’s been faithful to one man for the last 8-9 years, much to the chagrin of her male fans.

I own a couple of her greatest hits CDs, but I don’t really watch her dancing. Not my thing.
