Candidate Conversation: Sam Meas

Here is the second installment of conversations with Massachusetts Republicans seeking national office. Today, Sam Meas, candidate for United States Congress, Massachusetts Fifth District.

Bob: Good evening, Sam. As you may or may not know, but in 2007 I ran for Massachusetts republican Party Chair. Had I won, I’d want to meet with all the candidates and find out who they are and what the party could do to help them get elected. Why do you want to run?

Sam: Having lived under a socialist and communist regime early in my life, I have come to value freedom and liberty. Now that I have achieved the American dream, I want to make sure that the American dream that I have come to enjoy and value is preserved and cherished by generations of Americans to come.

Sam, tell me a little about your district and something about the incumbent you want them to fire, and why….

The fifth district is made of many of the cities and towns along the Merrimack River Valley which was at the forefront of the industrial revolution at the turn of the last century, many of these cities and towns were melting pots of immigrants from countries around the world seeking a better life in a new country.

Presently the fifth district is in a transition period having lost most of its manufacturing and industrial base first to the South and then to other countries. The challenge of bringing decent paying jobs is daunting due to the policy of the past. We have to change our way of thinking and policies in order to make it attractive for businesses to want to come back to the Fifth District.

I strongly believe that the incumbent does not have the business background nor does she have fundamental belief in a capitalistic system which will allow businesses to flourish and thrive in the District.

How about some specifics.

Compared to incumbent Congresswoman Niki Tsongas, whom I’ve been told spends little time in the district, what specifically would you do to make the Fifth business friendly, as far as what a congressman can do?

In general, she supports higher tax structure. she favors allowing the Bush tax cut to expire which would hurt those who would invest in businesses. She supports Cap & Trade which is a hidden tax on all consumers because the tax increase that would be levied on energy will be passed on in the form of high prices for good and services. She voted for the current health care bill which does address the issues that need to be addressed and that most Americans do not want.

I want to be a servant representative of the people who elect me. A Congressman needs to pay attention to the people who create good paying jobs, Union and Non-Union jobs, in the district. In my opinion, my job would be to remove the obstacles and barriers that are not conducive to new businesses and job creation.

I will also fight to change the tax system; and I agree with the President that we need to lower capital gain taxes and eventually eliminate them. I would also fight to eliminate the estate taxes, commonly known as the Death Taxes.

Let’s be optimistic about the predictions of the House and Senate makeup come this fall’s midterms.

Knowing what you do about President Obama, how would you convince him to become more business friendly, and how receptive do you think he’ll be should he lose his majorities?

You mean the Scott Brown’s effect?

The Scott Brown effect times a hundred or so.

(laughing)

If the President lost his majority in Congress, he would have no choice but to move toward the middle politically just as President Clinton had to.

My election to Congress as well as other conservatives across the country will demonstrate how upset & concerned the American people are about the direction in which their country is heading as evident by the elections in New Jersey, Virginia and Massachusetts.

What do you consider yourself? Conservative or moderate?

Conservative. My core values and beliefs were developed as a result my knowing what a socialist/communist country was like to live in. I was the beneficiary of the Reagan’s Doctrine which allowed me to come to America as an orphan and achieved the American dream through work, perseverance and a lot faith in the American capitalist system.

Lastly, I wrote a piece before the 2008 election called “Presidential Sucker Syndrome” because candidates make promises everyone with a brain knows they can’t keep. If you could make a promise to the people of the Fifth Congressional District, what would that be?

I promise the people of the Fifth District that when I am elected on November 2, 2010, I will be their Representative who will listen to and respect their needs. I will have an open & honest dialogue with all the people in my district not just the selected special interest groups. I will develop a relationship with people in every city and town in the District so that I can better understand what their specific needs are and what they expect of me, their Congressman.

Who would have thought that a boy from a mud hut of Cambodia, who had to survive by eating anything and everything I could find. Now he is a candidate for the United States Congress, Only in the Greatest Country in the World this could happen, America!

Sam Meas, the very best of luck to you in your primary!
