Forgot to cap that, didn’t I.
Sorry.
I hate not having a post review.
Our governor, Mitch Daniels, leased (75 year lease) one of our main sections of toll roads to an Australian consortium for a little over $4 Billion a couple of years ago. The lefties were pissed. They would rather keep losing $13 million a year on maintenance, etc. than to sit fat off the cash from the lease. Well, that and northern Indiana (Gary, Indiana) is a leftist stronghold and they didn’t want tolls to go up for their dependents (tolls hadn’t been raised since approximately 1973). But, Indiana is riding some of the economic storm out because that cash is in the bank, and it’s being used for some infrastructure projects.
A couple points: the road in the picture is bad ass; leftists are retarded; and Mitch Daniels for 2012.
too funny. Sometimes geography dictates how you can build a bridge
hmm, forgot to specify the “them”
“them” in this case, would be the private party, NOT the government.
Well, the government claims the agreement with the private party (forgot the name of the company) is that all tolls are to be collected and processed by them, and they must maintain the section of highway they are taking tolls from.
So barring them ignoring their contractual agreements because of corruption or whatever, the road should be maintained and remain in good shape.
Toll roads have good value IF the tolls are used just for the road and not to give featherbed jobs to the Pols cuzzins.
Having lived this experience (toll roads becoming free), I can attest there is but only one outcome:
Neglect.
Our own Highway 15 used to have toll stations over its entire length (except in Montreal). This money was used exclusively for maintenance of that highway, which meant the condition of the road was always pristine. They removed the tolls in the early 90s, and since then, the highway has been in utter disrepair, filled with cracks and bumps. Thankfully there aren’t any potholes, like on municipal roads (especially in Montreal) but the road’s condition prevents an enjoyable ride because of all the cracks and bumps you keep hitting.
Currently we are in the midst of creating a link between the north and south sections of Highway 25 (at the moment, one needs to take Highway 40, which is traffic-bound 24/7 in Montreal to connect to the other section of Highway 25). This section will be semi-private and will have tolls.
I’m willing to bet anything that in 10 years, that section of highway will still look near-mint.
Nice engineering. There is nothing like a couple of big pile of rocks for aesthetics. Glad to note by hovering over the pic, that it is Now toll free. You dont see that too much here in the US anymore…a toll road changing over to a free road.
Hit that sucker at 120mph and feel the wind as… you go flying and crash on/into the dirt and rocks.
What a ride. What a rush.
Seriously, though, what happens when (not IF) it ices over? No thanks.
Igor
I don’t care if it’s shopped, it’s cool as sh*t!
It’s certainly aesthetically interesting, but is it ‘shopped?
