I could care less about the Muslim groups, but I feel for the man’s family. It’s really weird, but they remind me of a conservative, religious family who hunted and fished together – and then one of their sons became a gun- and food-stockpiling survivalist with paranoia about the government. He moved to Montana with his wife and in-laws, and none of them has heard from him since.

I had a conversation with several Muslim co-workers and neighbors whose families immigrated in the ’60s and ’70s. They were happy and proud to become American. They didn’t understand why young men romanticize sharia law or why young women cover their heads – in fact, they were the first ones who explained to me that Muslim women DON’T HAVE TO. I can’t imagine how they would feel if one of their grandsons became anti-American or if one of their granddaughters decided to don a burkha.

Judging just from my peers, I think that often young Americans want to have an exotic identity, so they latch onto something like their grandparent’s nationality or an idealized view of the “motherland” – kind of forgetting why their forefathers and foremothers didn’t head back to the “motherland” themselves.

(Yes, I’m rambling again.)
