YouTube Conservative Video Purge (With Consent)

YouTubeI got this email about one of my videos on YouTube.

Dear BlackAndRight,

Your video To Our Americans Serving in Iraq has become popular on YouTube, and you’re eligible to apply for the YouTube Partnership Program, which allows you to make money from playbacks of your video.

Once you’re approved, making money from your video is easy. Here’s how it works: First sign into your YouTube account. Then, complete the steps outlined here: http://www.youtube.com/ivp?v=m9Yc3wYJOtI. Once you’re finished, we’ll start placing ads next to your video and pay you a share of the revenue as long as you meet the program requirements.

We look forward to adding your video to the YouTube Partnership Program. Thanks and good luck!

The YouTube Team

Sounds good, right…?

So I start clicking through their tutorial and came upon this.

YouTube Partnership Program: Tutorial

Processing your video can take time. Please be patient!
Once processed, one of the following will happen:

  • If approved, advertising will appear with the video.
  • If rejected, the video will be deleted from YouTube. You will receive an email notification if your video is rejected.

Imagine that. You are essentially giving YouTube your consent to have them remove your video if it doesn’t meet their selectively-enforced “community guidelines”.

It appears this is how YouTube can say they’re being fair and non-discriminatory about their revenue sharing program, and can use their eligibility criteria behind closed doors as a reason to delete videos they don’t agree with or like, and do so while offering a carrot.

Needless to say, I don’t need to enroll in such a program. The revenue would be nice, but essentially giving YouTube my permission to remove that video just doesn’t seem to be the smart thing to do.

I would actually recommend it. They would’ve deleted the video already if they wanted to. There is some revenue to be had from YouTube. One of the people I’m subscribed to has nothing but conservative viewpoints in his videos and none have been deleted so far.

    Here’s the linky:

  2. Bob Says:

Yes, but my only concern is that when YouTube purges video, you can contest it (for all it’s worth). Here, you are giving them consent to a video that’s already gone viral.

I guess it’s up to the individual if you want to take that chance.

  3. girzwald Says:

Ya. Agreed with Bob. Better not give them ammo to defend themselves with.

I.E. A popular anti obama video gets lots of hits.

If not enrolled, if they delete it, they can get lots of flak and only throw out vague reasons for doing so.

If enrolled, by them “not choosing it” it automatically gets deleted. It being a stipulation of the rules.

  4. Nicolas Says:

anyway, I think it’s absolutely killer your iraq video you mentioned has 800,000 hits, Bob, hell of a milestone for your work. Eric is right, Lee Dorin has is an outright conservative and I’ll be damned if I see youtube delete any of HIS content. It MIGHT be worth it someday to be a partner, not sure though. who knows?

  5. Nicolas Says:

damn, I meant to say 800,000+ hits

  6. Nicolas Says:

also, 3 other examples of Conservative partners flourishing on youtube are Sharise Parviz, Steven Crowder, and ofcoarse, as we all know…the awesomeness that is Zo (strangely enough he’s not a partner yet). I’ll be damned if youtube takes down THEIR videos because they are conservative
