To BET Or Not To BET

BETI’ve been asked to appear a week from today on a panel discussion, topic Obamacare, on Black Entertainment Television.

I will be outnumbered (the only conservative) and it will be in front of a most probably hostile audience at the Newseum in Washington, D.C.

I’d make this a poll question but my poll isn’t working.

Whaddaya think: should I do BET?

Exposure is always good for a blogger’s career. But if you sense hostility, – reverse the interview and ask “how many of THEM believe that being black obligates all black people to follow in lockstep behind the MEssiah, – or are black folks still allowed to THINK for themselves, and express their OWN opinions?”

For instance, ” . . . should Van Jones have been vetted, – or was he “good enough” just because he is black?”

Either way Bob, – have a little fun with them!

  2. IT Nerd Says:

    Bob –

How many others (libs) will participate in the discussion?

I say go for it. You have intellect, facts, and a strong command of the Queen’s English on your side in order to effectively debate this topic.

  3. MEmanuel Says:

    I say do it.

Just be sure to stand your ground, speak logically, and prepare for ad hominem attacks from those that will appear with you. BET is the Mecca of general negro ignorance. At a minimum, you can throw it straight to NMATV.

On another note of Obamacare, I had a young lady with the AFL-CIO come to my house yesterday and try to convince me to write a small note my senators expressing my support for it. Now, I live in the “hood” and she wasn’t expecting it when I told her I was against government health care and the public option. The look on her face was sorta like, “But, your black…how can this be?” It was the same look the Acorn workers that came to my house during the election had when I told them I was a conservative and wouldn’t be supporting Obama.

  4. Mary Ann Says:

I say do it too. No expectations though. You’ll be outnumbered…but you never know…if you can get a word in edgewise….there might be someone out there watching that hears you.

  5. SFJ Says:

I don’t know: I see it as pissing in the wind. Us racist honkies don’t watch BET but I’m guessing that the audience is hard core lib and nothing you could say would change any minds and you’d just be set up as an Uncle Tom? You’d be the token conservative and that’s it. Maybe I’m wrong and there is part of an audience (at least at home) that would listen to you?

Has there ever been other notable black conservatives on the program in question? How were they treated? Always like a good fight but they control the mic switch and format.

Maybe Pastor Manning could join you? :-)

If you go, let us know when.

  6. breadbasket Says:

The lone conservative? Are you sure they’re not going to cloroform you and dump on the BILL MAHER set? Seriously, just stick to the facts and your beliefs and you’ll be find. Yes, you will be the unpopular voice, but people who know what they are and what they believe have less problems with these things. I mean, can it be worse than all those nasty youtube comments? Deep down, there are more black conservatives out there than what the POTUS election indicates. They will be in the audience, too, though sort of incognito. Just don’t say “You lie”!

  7. girzwald Says:

    Its a trap.

  8. Cameron Says:

I say go for it and have fun.

  9. TexRex Says:

If it is a live format I say go for it. You will get some free exposure for your blog. The worst outcome there would be a troll infestation, and we can have fun with that.

On the other hand, if it is a taped and edited piece, I vote to pass. We all know how those end.

  10. Marla Says:

Well, as a HONKY, I’d watch you on BET IF I had it as a cable option. But I don’t have that as an option.

    I would advise the following:

Have your points ready, in small sentences. You may not know what they’ll ask you to answer. Be steady, calm, speak slowly enough as to not trip over words.

Be basic and factual and have documentation that backs up what you say and wave it around if you need to.

Do not get flustered. If you don’t know the answer to something, admit it and say that’s a good question and I will check into that – because nobody knows everything.

And yes, be prepared to be in a trap. If the discussion is about healthcare, remind them that the current proposed Health care bill HR 3200 (that’s all we’ve seen as yet) is NOT about health care (rather about complete gov control of our lives), even with out a public option the gov is likely to put in some verbage they can re-interpret later.

But also remember that unless YOU and THEY have the new actual proposed BILL and have actually read and digested everything, NONE of you can really speak to it, right?

  11. Igor Says:

I say go for it, Bob, you’ll be the only adult there.

All the advice previously given is good. We’ve got your back!

    Igor

  12. onewiseguy Says:

I say ask them to also invite Kevin Jackson from the Blacksphere (http://theblacksphere.net). Let them know you won’t appear unless they have more conservative representation. I’m sure you could handle them just fine but it would be better if the viewers saw more than one black conservative…that would send a much better message that conservative ideals are NOT just for whites and “Uncle Toms”.

  13. jbaker0725 Says:

Sounds to me like a set up to get slaughtered or to be used as a whipping boy.

In the business world we always ensure equal numbers from each party are present in any negotiation

  14. Deborah1029 Says:

    Bob,

I think you should do it Bob, if ONLY to represent the voice of reason and truth. Undoubtedly they will be hostile towards you and say you are a sell out or Uncle Tom; but as you are a conservative African American, I am sure this isn’t the first time and surely it won’t be the last.

Speaking as a fellow African American, I feel you should do it IN SPITE OF the name calling and hostility. We have a duty as conservatives to take EVERY opportunity to show other African Americans (yes, and the rest of the country) that other than the color of skin, we share NOTHING with President Zero! We are a God fearing, life loving people! We are a people of FAITH, and have no business embracing the feeble and monotonous hopey changey drone of the left. And this message needs to be spoken out loud EVERY chance we get; REGARDLESS of the names we are called. Because as Mary Ann points out in her comment below, perhaps just ONE person will not only LISTEN to your words of truth, but actually HEAR them. Perhaps just ONE person will have the veiled lifted from their eyes and be able to see Nobama’s TRUE agenda—one that has absolutely nothing to do with the good of America or her citizens. While I am honored to be a part of history that includes the first African American President; I know that our race has more to offer America than this radical puppet on a string currently occupying the WH.
Yes, we need to take EVERY opportunity; EVERY platform offered and call evil out! Call it what it is—EVIL. When they dish out their usual helping of utter nonsense; slap the truth on it and send it right back to ‘em!! You be God’s vessel. Stand and allow his truth to pour out through you… be God’s voice. Just stand and He’ll do the rest; you KNOW His word will not come back void!

    God bless you!

  15. RoseRRR Says:

Bob, you obviously know what to expect from this crowd.

    But consider this:

Perhaps there will be a future Bob (or “Roberta”!) Parks in the viewing audience that needs to be exposed to someone like you in order to bolster his or her confidence in what they truly believe.

I think of you as much more than a role model, but sometimes that expression fits you pretty well. No pressure, Bob . . . .

  16. Trishmac Says:

Onewiseguy has a point, if you were allowed to have a second voice on your side, they couldn’t gang up on you as readily. And we know they will be merciless.
But either way, I say do it. I am sure it will come as a shock to many who watch BET, that there are good and decent black people with conservative values. And yet it may be a pleasant surprise to some, because I truly believe there are more conservative black people that aren’t heard from, than there are liberals!

  17. louielouie Says:

    you decidei

  18. The Machine Says:

    “No puclicity is bad publicity….”

    It is all just publicity.

  19. The Machine Says:

And, Bob, considering the above about publicity, “plan B” is simple enough.

If one of ‘em gets demeaning or insulting, stand up and punch the bastard out on TV.

  20. Ike Says:

    Bob – Do it.

And go back and read my comment to Tabby T from the other day.

When you get your chance to speak, tell your story.

    YOUR story.

It’s compelling. And it’s you. And it completely erases the stupid ad hominem attacks that they will level at you otherwise.

    Be yourself.

Someone out there will benefit from discovering you. Then we all will.

  21. Cindy Says:

Go ahead and do it Sweets! But don’t come crying to me when they eat you alive!

And make sure you get the video, I would like to see it.

What’s up with the acronym BET? Nothing like “unity”, right? Where’s my W.E.T. channel?

  22. Nicolas Says:

well, if you feel you can hold your own, then by all means, DO it! hell, be so bold as to call black liberals who foolishly SUPPORT Obama an “uncle tom” as the B.E.T. generation NEEDS TO KNOW it’s not DEMOKKKRATS that have supported them throughout history….they’ve been lied to on race…

  23. Hoss Says:

I’d say do it, absolutely, but I’m with Tex, don’t do it if it’s going to be diced and spliced. I don’t trust them enough. But, I have all the faith in the world you will be awesome, and I’ll definitely be watching.

  24. cmjcex Says:

I’ve got more follow-on questions for you that may help you decide.

    1. Has BET ever conducted any similar panel discussions in the past? If yes, how did they turn out.

    2. Is there an expected format or will it be like a Jerry Springer show?

    3. Who are the other panelists? If they are all well-known (or otherwise notorious like Van Jones) do they already have a stated position? If they are all lock-step sycophants for anything ultra liberal then you should ask for equal time for your position. You don’t want to just get 1/8 of the time if there is a total of 8 panelists and all the others are just repeating the same mantra. All they can do is say no.

    4. Will it be taped and edited for broadcast? You should seek rights for the entire unedited version if it is to be edited.

I’m sure you are heaped with lots of abuse. I can’t imagine it gets any better with time.

    Best to you.

  25. srdb Says:

Ouch… well, Michelle handled herself very well on The View. I’d say give it a shot, but go in there expecting problems and don’t let them rile you up. Good luck on whatever you do. They probably won’t be the ones acting mature.

  26. Tabbysmom Says:

As a white conservative woman, originally from New Orleans,I believe you owe it to your fellow conservatives (whatever color) to be there as a voice of reason. You are obviously a man of principle and that’s a hard to find that these days. Know that there ARE conservative blacks out there that need you to set an example, and people need to hear the other side of the issues from a black CONSERVATIVE perspective. At least, BET is offering you the opportunity to be on the panel..Is there a law out there that says you have to be a Democrat or Liberal? Last I looked, people still had the choice to be whatever political affiliation they desired…at least, for now, that is!Thank you for the opportunity to voice my opinion.

  27. bobkatowc51 Says:

I think you should. Just remember the alinsky rules for radical, and point them out to all that are going to ridicule you. They will ask if you are smoking some funny herbs, laugh at you. Shout you down. The personal attacks. Just point out to them that this doesn’t help the debate about health care. Remember this is a debate about different views and they don’t want to debate they want to tell you what is the correct way. Then, I don’t have to explain any of this to you. Just refuse to get angry. That’s what they will want. (A.R F.R)alinsky rules for radicals

  28. MissJean Says:

Deborah and others said it so much better than I can, but please do it, Bob.

When I was a kid, Bill Lucas ran for the governor of Michigan. He had switched his party affiliation and the questions came this way, “How can you – as a black man – join the Republican Party?”

He simply pointed out that he had come to realize that the politicians and voters who shared his values were Republicans. And to not switch parties would have been hypocrisy. He did not win against the incumbent, but he got some people to consider whether they were making choices or just being led by the nose.

I’d bet you will do the same, Bob.

  29. IT Nerd Says:

So, Bob – Has the jury reached a verdict?

  30. Bob Says:

I had lunch today with an official from Project 21 and I’ve decided I will go on if they keep the ratio even. I can’t recall (with the exception of Alan Combs on Fox News) a lone liberal going on a show with an all-conservative panel and conservative audience.

As I’m not starved for publicity, this isn’t something I need to do. Keeping the ratios even will keep the participants on message.

    Thanks for the invaluable input.

  31. Mauser Says:

One Caveat. Remember that they’re going to try to trap you verbally, and it will probably be as clumsy as Sean Hannity. Learn the Liberal tactic of quickly dismissing the question and getting on to your talking point. Remember, every time they ask you a question they’re really ceding the floor. Take it!

  32. Idl Says:

Wear full body armor! lol! I’d pay money to be in the audience for this one! You’re a braver soul than I.
