Dan Rather: Media Czar?

Dan Rather shares some of his thoughts on the state of public media as he gives a personal interview at the Aspen Meadows on Tuesday before his speech at the Aspen Institute later that evening. Heather Rousseau/Aspen Daily NewsGranted, I never attended or worked in any of the hallowed halls of mainstream journalism, but if the media needs saving, there is a good reason (not to mention a total lack of impartiality and arrogance). But to add insult to injury, the idea is being floated that the media needs to be “saved”, and just who do you think the saviors would be…?

Former CBS News anchor Dan Rather called on President Barack Obama to form a White House commission to help save the press Tuesday night in an impassioned speech at the Aspen Institute.

“I personally encourage the president to establish a White House commission on public media,” the legendary newsman said.

Such a commission on media reform, Rather said, ought to make recommendations on saving journalism jobs and creating new business models to keep news organizations alive. At stake, he argued, is the very survival of American democracy.

And who would helm this commission, Dan?

The problem is that the media always assumed the American people had no choice but to come to them, regardless of the accuracy and/or impartiality of their product. They even rubbed their partisanship and biased coverage in our faces last year, and now they’re all apoplectic because their customers have bolted.

If Dan Rather thinks Barack Obama can save his profession, he clearly hasn’t been paying attention lately.

This comes from the man who is the poster child for media bias–ohhh puuleeeze Danny-boy give it up already! You haven’t been relevant since you were hip deep in rice paddies…

How fortunate we are to have the Internet.

“keep news organizations alive. At stake, he argued, is the very survival of American democracy”

Correction: Allow the main stream media organizations to survive if they are sufficiently fit, otherwise leave them to wither and die. They are part of the problem.

    Dan, Dan, the clueless man.

If they just stuck to being unbiased in their reporting, they wouldn’t is need to be saved. The reason they are losing viewers & listeners is because they don’t report all newsworthy information. They have been covering Obama’s butt from the beginning & bashing all other Candidates into submission. They allowed Obama & his “people” to dictate what they were allowed to ask Obama & assassinated the rest of the candidates. For Obama, they had to play nice & played class bully with everyone else. They omitted all information about any eligibility issues or past connections to unsavory associates. They even went so far to say Obama had no connections to ACORN, even though it was well known Obama & Aires were trainers for ACORN upper management. Until they use fairness in reporting & unbiased support for one Political Party over another, they will stay unworthy of our support.
