Video Of The Day

Now, THIS is cool…

Rail View Of Tornado
This came from a real train “addict” and the explanation below is his:

“Trains nowadays mount cameras in their cabs, facing forward and backward, the same way police cars do. This is a train that ran through a tornado.

First there is the normal rearward view from the last of three engines, with the trees looking normal. Then you begin to see rain, then halfway through the video, the trees begin to sway violently, then the fun begins.”

Fascinating!

while it is an ohshit moment, looks like straight line winds to me.
it’s probably just oklahoma tornadoes that pick up train cars and throw ‘em a mile.

Thats not a good feeling watching that tanker car that remained on the rails coming towards the camera. I wonder what was in it.

    Whoa!! I wasn’t expecting that!

You could tell the cars were empty, the way they were bucking and weaving. I’ve seen (and been in!) winds in North Dakota that blew trucks and cars off the roads – the light or unloaded cars/trucks were literally tossed around by a mini-tornado. The heavies survived.

I was worried about that tank, it’s a *good* thing that to forward bogie decided to fail and the tank scrape along the track, since it lost a lot of forward momentum and therefore wasn’t seriously breached when it finally came to a stop at the engine… fuel-air exploisions are not fun!

Oklahoma? Minnesota? North or South Dakota?

    Ouch.

    Looks like sabotage to me!

    OH SHIT!!!!!!!!!!!!

That is definitely an “Oh Shit” moment & extremely scary. About 18 year ago we had a tank car loaded with 30,000 gallons of Propane explode. The sound was heard about 75 miles away & the vapor cloud that ignited was visible 40 miles away. I happened to be about 5 miles from the detonation point & was knocked down by the concussion I also had my face “sun burned” from the radiant heat. The two ends of the tank car wound up about 5 miles apart & one end stopped less than 3/4 mile from where I was located. Fortunately nobody was seriously injured, but it destroyed 2 engines & a dozen or more freight cars. It also broke windows in homes as far as 5 miles away. I do remember that the heat was intense. It was found out after an ICC investigation that the car had repairs(welding)on the Valve Dome on the top center of the tank car just 3 days earlier. The gravel ballast around the site had flames coming from it for many hours after (vaporized propane was driven deep into the gravel & was slowly released. Someone made a rough calculation of the BTU’s consumed in the flashover, but I don’t remember what it was. Oh,the two ends of the tank car flew high in the air & bounced about a 1/2 mile before they came to a rest, about 5 miles apart. It made National Headlines & scared the crap out of people living close to rail lines.

    O M G ! That was awesome!!!!

Would it be sexist of me to think only a guy would say “Now, THIS is cool…”? And it is :-P

    Mary Ann:
Guilty as charged! When it comes to things blowing up, being destroyed, or just plain mayhem with things that go BOOM!, I just love it!

Caveat: Nobody gets to be hurt in this un/controlled mayhem.

I love watching controlled detonation, it’s truly an art form combining engineering (ya gotta know how it’s put together, along with strength of materials) with.. well… ART. KnowwhutImean?

I’m just a little boy at heart, a very well trained boy. Be VERY afraid! :)

Nope, I thought it was cool, too. But then, I have four older brothers and think that movies without anything blowing up in them are a tidge boring… not your typical female attitudes, I’m sure.

But then, as hubby says, most of his friends are STILL not sure if I’m for real… because they’ve heard me say that I’d rather see a zillion re-runs of anything Lethal Weapon or Die Hard than be forced to sit through the latest “chick flick”…

I thought it was cool, too. I’ve found tornados fascinating/scary since I first experienced a one as a kid.
