What needs to happen is that the The People become so repulsed by leftism that the "liberals" (whether Dem or GOP) are thoroughly discredited. And, it seems to me, for the left to be permanently discredited requires that they really hose up the nation so that there is no rational excuse for refusing to admit that the problem is the leftism itself. Ultimately, though, its not enough simply for the GOP to win the 2010 midterms and the 2012 presidential election.

What needs to happen is that the The People become so repulsed by leftism that the “liberals” (whether Dem or GOP) are thoroughly discredited.

And, it seems to me, for the left to be permanently discredited requires that they really hose up the nation so that there is no rational excuse for refusing to admit that the problem is the leftism itself.
