Send In The Clown

Al Franken with his wife Franni by his side addressed the media on Monday after The state Canvassing Board certified the results of the U.S. Senate recount this afternoon, showing Democrat Al Franken with a 225-vote advantage over incumbent Republican Norm Coleman. Not surprisingly, the Minnesota Supreme Court ruled unanimously that Al Franken legally and fairly defeated Norm Coleman for United States Senate. I’m still not buying it…

The Minnesota Supreme Court ruled today that Democrat Al Franken won the U.S. Senate election and said he was entitled to an election certificate that would lead to him being seated in the Senate.

“Affirmed,” wrote the Supreme Court, unanimously rejecting Republican Norm Coleman’s claims that inconsistent practices by local elections officials and wrong decisions by a lower court had denied him victory.

Now if memory serves, Coleman led Franken by 725 votes after the election. After some political phishing and selective discarding of military absentee ballots, Franken “won” by 312 votes. If our electoral system was worth the bragging rights, the recount should have come out pretty close to the original tally.

What this illustrates is that it’s easy to overturn an election. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: when Republicans win by recount it’s “overturning an election”; when Democrats win by recount it’s “the will of the people”.

Minnesota, enjoy your new senator. If you weren’t a laughing stock before, you still won’t be because Al Franken has always been a clown that isn’t funny.

When I lived in Washington in 2004, the same thing happened in the gubernatorial election. The Republican won on the first count, the first, mandatory machine recount. Only when they added disallowed votes did Christine Gregoire win. Read all about it here:

What is it with Minnesota and celebrities? I have lost all respect for the state. Especially Franken, a smug comedy writer. I am so waiting for 2010 and the future political reckoning. Just wait until unemployement hit 11%. Obama will start aging in leap yrs then.

Other countries have to laugh their asses off when we send over people to monitor their elections. We’re making banana republics look legit these days.
