It'll hurt, but tightening the belt, really not in funny money numbers, will be hard. However, another source of that pain could come if the resident-in-chief is found to be illegitimate. What then? By law he should be ousted and tried for criminal charges of both sedition (as a foreigner), and fraud. The riots that would ensue could likely send us into 3rd world status, but at least it would be with integrity to what the Constitution says and stands for, eventually we could recover from that. I'm not sure there's a recovery for where we're heading if O, Pelosi, Rahm, etc. get their way. @Igor – one wonders if, in terms of pain, the tea parties will become some sort of grounding point for real, useful change. But I know how to read, and I've read the Constitution regularly over the last couple of decades and know that the legislative powers of the Congress are strictly limited. They are defined in Article I, Section 8 ('Powers of Congress'). Go ahead and read it; it's pretty terse and to the point. The first 16 clauses define the subjects regarding which the Congress can legislate on behalf of the whole Republic and apply within all the states. None of it can be construed to pertain to any kind of building code. Of course, they get around this by tying otherwise unenforceable legislation to funding of some kind. If a state is willing to do without the funding, it can ignore the legislation. OK, so I’m not a lawyer.
