Obama Reinvents The Lightbulb

White House announces new lighting standardsThere truly is nothing sacred to this administration. They believe they can do everything better (they aren’t excluding much), and they’ll take yet another American success story and screw with it.

Aiming to keep the focus on climate change legislation, President Barack Obama put a plug in for administration efforts to make lamps and lighting equipment use less energy.

“I know light bulbs may not seem sexy, but this simple action holds enormous promise because 7 percent of all the energy consumed in America is used to light our homes and businesses,” the president said, standing alongside Energy Secretary Steven Chu at the White House.

Obama said the new efficiency standards he was announcing for lamps would result in substantial savings between 2012 and 2042, saving consumers up to $4 billion annually, conserving enough energy to power every U.S. home for 10 months, reducing emissions equal to the amount produced by 166 million cars a year, and eliminating the need for as many as 14 coal-fired power plants.

Someone will have to show me the raw data for these figures, because in order to make their points, these climate-changers have a tendency to pull “truth” out of their asses.

The fact that they seek to *compel* such change is proof that they’re making up the figures. No one has to compel efficiency; no one has to compel businesses or consumers to adopt more efficient means and ends.

Something that is indeed more efficient will be less expensive over its full life (purchase and use/operation and disposal); therefore, free people in a free market will move of their own accord to the more efficient classes of products.

There is still a scary amount of people who think these guys are the s**t. A man who did nothing in our Illinois state legislature is suddenly a f*****g genius.

I wonder, how many people and media organizations still back him to avoid admitting their mistake last November. Hey, I remember saying that Sam Bowie was a great pick and some guy named Michael Jordan would be a good backcourt addition. I spent years insisting Bowie would turn around and become great. Finally, I broke down and admitted I was a total fraud in the talent selection arena. But hey, at least it was just basketball!!!

I wonder when they’ll tell you what to record on your DVR…

  4. Mauser Says:

This could be related to those reduced-wattage incandescent bulbs I mentioned a while ago, where you get a 67 watt bulb instead of a 75.

  5. Henry Says:

I will NEVER use the Chinese mercury bulbs in my home!

  6. Palmetto Says:

I have half a closet full of good old incandescent bulbs in a nice assortment of wattages. I’m planning ahead. However, what is the White House going to use in their chandeliers? You can bet it won’t be those ugly squiggly things. And if they use regular chandelier light bulbs, will they be available to the great unwashed?

@Bob – “…these climate-changers have a tendency to pull “truth” out of their asses.” – INDEED!

@Palmetto – “will they be available to the great unwashed?” – Is you crazy?!? Those will only be available under a special executive dispensational order, specifically for the use of the ONE, himself.

How long before we start having the EPA crack down on environmental mercury levels in homes? Then they’ll outlaw the CFLs, we can’t use candles because of their carbon footprint, so it’ll just be dark. I suppose a curfew would be in order at that time, and they’ll probably just shut off the electricity at night, since we don’t need to see anyhow. Gee, that sounds a lot like North Korea today.

[...] TCM has a lot on his plate, but he’s never too busy to tell Americans what kinds of light bulbs they will use. [...]

  9. WDC Says:

Yesterday morning, we had a nice little storm, we needed the rain. But, we did take a couple of big surges and guess what blew out? Not the incandescent bulbs, but the POCs that are supposed to last 7 years. Maybe their weren’t properly inflated?

Obama, in his all knowing wisdom will reinvent the light bulb – a candle & a match & call it the Super High Efficiency Thermoluminescent Lighting Thingy! A super bargain at only $19.99 -postage extra ($29.99). Added advantage – not effected by Brownouts or lightening strikes!
