OK, my understanding of bankruptcy may be faulty, but if I have the basics right, then this is a possible scenario.
If a major corporation files for bankruptcy, then they can disregard or modify union contracts (this is where I might be wrong, but it seems to me I have encountered this in the past). If GM had done this two months ago, then the UAW would be SOL. Now that the UAW owns 30% of GM, they are in a much nicer position with the current bankruptcy filing.
As I said, I’m no lawyer, but if this is even partly correct, then someone could do a little profitable figuring to see whether or not this is, as we suspect, a juicy payoff to the UAW at the expense of the real owners of GM.
the mere fact that the union owns part of the company is nonsensical. I mean, any problems between the union and the “bosses” would be a conflict of interest, as the union itself IS part of the “bosses”
I wouldn’t mind calling up the Canadian Gov’t who bought 11.7% of GM and tell them that 300$ of taxes I paid(out of the near 7000$ I paid in taxes last year on both levels of government) them that went to buy GM should be sent up where the Sun don’t shine.

Let’s hope, and work, to build our courage, strength, and conviction, in order to face whatever may come. Our ancestors persevered, and we are the beneficiaries of their sacrifice and faith. That sacrifice, in some form, may be required again; but, not yet.

You’re right. I had read the 30% figure somewhere a couple of weeks ago and went with it. Maybe the UAW got 30% of Chrysler, I don’t know, but your figure of 17% of GM is correct.
Either way, it’s completely off the law books.
