Time Laments Administration Tax Cheats

Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius testifies before the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee during her confirmation hearing to be Secretary of Health and Human Services on Capitol Hill on March 31, 2009. (Chip Somodevilla / Getty)While the Obama administration is saddling all of us with an obscene, generational debt, America is being denied the appointment of the best and brightest simply because they failed to do something we’re all forced to: pay taxes.

At what point does congressional due diligence become onerous and unreasonable flyspecking? With legions of Obama Administration posts sitting vacant amid multiple national crises, that’s the question that many in Washington are asking.

Of course, there may be a solution here for everyone to consider. If so many smart and talented officials are getting tripped up over their tax returns, perhaps it is time for Washington to make the tax code simpler for everyone.

Ordinary people have their returns garnished when they fall a year behind on taxes owed, but for some reason America’s “smart and talented officials” seem to get away with non-payment for years, owing tens of thousands of dollars, and only fess up after receiving a nomination. If not for that, who knows how long they’d get away with it.

Ms. Tumulty, it has nothing to do with the difficulty of the tax code and everything to do with the privileged who believe it only applies to “ordinary people”.
