Nah, This Wasn’t Meant To Be Offensive

Dallas artist Glen Tarnowski substituted Bugs Bunny for Jesus and other cartoon characters for disciples in his parody of "The Last Supper," which he called "The Gathering." (Chuck Jones Gallery)

Two weeks ago, the gallery put on display an oil painting parody of Leonardo da Vinci’s “The Last Supper.” Named “The Gathering,” it substitutes Looney Tunes and other cartoon characters for disciples and Bugs Bunny for Jesus.

“We never intended to offend anyone,” said Mike Dicken, national sales director for the gallery at 2501 San Diego Ave. “Most people think it’s fun and amusing, but 5 percent are pulling their hair out.”

So it’s all about overreacting and percentages.

Tell you what, Mr. Dicken. Since this is all about fun, we eagerly await your oil painting Muslim parody version. The percentages are sure to be much higher.

I think I can sympathize with the artist. maybe it’s meant to make that idea of the original painting an easier idea to digest for kids who might later see and know about the original?

I think it’s kind of cool as I used to see looney tunes spoofs as a kid, of other famous artworks, and I later came to know about the originals

In MY mind, I have no problem with it. I don’t know about others though..

Where is Foghorn Leghorn and Yosemite Sam?

I mean they’ve got the Grinch who doesn’t even fit, the Chickenhawk, the Monster and the fairly obscure Alexander so why not those other more well known characters?

It’s not like this hasn’t been done before. I sense the use of conservative outrage as a form of Viral Marketing.

The purposely insulting “art” that shows up before Easter is a lot more offensive and usually at least a PG-13 level.

Bob, I tried tracking back from my blog. I don’t know if it worked, but I’ll try to send my four readers over here. :)

I would like to give you my first reaction to this painting, or illustration, whatever it is. I saw it, grinned, and enjoyed it.

Now, I am a Christian and really — very bothered by ‘art’ like ‘PissChrist’ and the other nastiness that anti-Christian ‘artists’ like to produce. But this one I think was whimsical and charming.

BTW, how long before someone does an Obama version?

(Admittedly, all the tax cheats are making it difficult for him to appoint 12 apostles/Cabinet members, but he’ll get there eventually.)
