Be ready for a lot of pissed off people in the coming days.
On April 1, the federal cigarette tax will increase by 62 cents to a total of $1.01 per pack, to fund the expansion of the State Children’s Health Insurance Program that was signed into law earlier this year. A new survey shows that the April 1st federal price increase on cigarettes and the current economy are big concerns for smokers and will change their current smoking habits.
And when cigarette revenues decrease, just where do you think the government will go to get money “for the children”…?

Heroin and Meth taxes.
Sorry, Nick, but I wouldn’t be surprised if a great number of smokers who have been thinking about quitting will actually do it now rather than pay the tax. Besides, it’s getting more and more difficult to find someplace to actually enjoy a cigarette anyway. Then guess whose pockets they will have to pick to fund their childrens health program?
well I guess I don’t have to worry about the smoke tax hike, being that I don’t smoke
Aside from the unfair targeting of this tax, it disgusts me that the government is essentially exploiting people’s addictions for their own agenda. If the tax was actually used to fund “free” smoking cessation programs, I might think the government actually gave a damn about us.
It’s definitely just the beginning of the end unless we fight back!
When they raised taxes on smokers I said nothing because I didn’t smoke.
When they raised taxes on …
Beer, wine and spirits will probably be next. After all, drinking alcohol isn’t good for you. Then it will be junk food because that’s unhealthy, too.
It’ll never stop until WE the people stop it. THEY are hooked on taxes and won’t quit until they are forced to quit.
And I still cannot get over the survey where 26% of people think the government has its own money. Somebody please clue in the clueless.
Food most likely.
