Don’t Punch The Girl

I’ve been an off-and-on hockey fan since the early seventies. I’ve seen many an on-ice donnybrook or two. We want to see the enforcers fight. But when it comes to a National Hockey League player hitting a girl, albeit just with words, this got a little more than two minutes for roughing.

Sean Avery finally ran out of ways to cross the line. So he invented a new one. And in one stunningly inappropriate sentence yesterday a career built on indiscretion may finally face the sort of justice he’s eluded for so long.

By now you’ve heard or seen the clip in which the Dallas Stars wart announces to a wall of reporters he wants to make a statement…

“I’m really happy to be back in Calgary, I love Canada. I just wanted to comment on how it’s become like a common thing in the NHL for guys to fall in love with my sloppy seconds. I don’t know what that’s about. But, enjoy the game tonight.”

Whoops.

I’m kind of torn on this one.

While this kind of smut talk isn’t good PR for any organization, especially one part of a sport consistently smarting for it’s condoned violence, there is also a free speech element being blown off.

What Avery said of Elisha Cuthbert is the epitome of tastelessness, should you be potentially banned from employment because of “sloppy seconds”?

There are Hollywood celebrities, CEO’s, politicians and activists who’ve said and done a whole lot worse and are STILL WORKING. Remember what was said about Sarah Palin.

Tough call.

    Yeah, guy loves Calgary, he loves Canada, but he bashes on his Calgary-born ex-girlfriend.

    While I do believe Cuthbert is a bit of an airhead (the list of “proof” is too long to list here), she still doesn’t deserve to get insulted in that manner.

    Women have put up with the “jock” mentality since the beginning of time. Some men are so self centered and full of themselves they’d never even stop to think of the pain they may cause a woman by such remarks. If he’s that big a jerk in breaking up, imagine what she put up with when they were going together? Then there are some women that are attracted to these pigs, it only encourages them.

    If my understanding of those remarks are correct, then there is no room for debate. For those who defend his comments as ‘just part of the game,’ I wonder how they would react if someone of Avery’s ilk had cast those disparaging remarks toward their mother, or heaven forbid, their future wife, even if she is/was “an airhead.” You see, even “airheads” of the female persuasion, will hopefully (although the odds are steadily decreasing), one day become wives and mothers – and that institution should be defended just as strongly as you defend your country and your constitution.

    ” … fall in love with my sloppy seconds.” is a lot different than saying ” … John McCain finished a sloppy second.”

    I’m a “nice guy” and I’ve never finished last – and I’ve never tried to gain points by dabasing the role of women in society and you know what! … I never will.

    I think the league wanted to make an example of him. Earlier this year, the league had to create a new rule because of his antics during the playoffs and now this. His potty mouth alone should not have been a reason for a suspension.
