The Rosie Bomb

This was supposed to be the revival of the variety show format. If memory serves, those who’ve hosted variety shows in the past were… liked?

Rosie O’Donnell gave NBC a real turkey. The network’s attempt to revive the primetime variety show failed to draw an audience Wednesday night, tying for the evening’s lowest-rated program.

“There’s a notion that the climate is right for the genre to make a comeback,” emailed one executive at a rival network. “I guess we now know what not to do, thanks to Rosie.”

Critics were not kind. The NY Times described it as “hokey comedy with an enemies list.” TV Guide called it a “ghastly ego trip.” And the LA Times asked, “Rosie, what on earth were you thinking?”

Let me rephrase that. You don’t have to be liked, but I don’t remember a segment of the population that truly despised Lawrence Welk or Donny & Marie or Dan Rowan and Dick Martin or Carol Burnett. Rosie O’Donnell, by her own doing, is truly despised.

And now for a musical number….

When I was home my parents and I ridiculed the show via its commercials.

I mean, seriously. Come on. It’s the angriest women in showbiz. What could possibly go wrong?

When are actors going to realize that just because they have a built in audience it doesn’t mean we want to hear about who they hate in a Christmas special?

    Annoying and pathetic.

  4. SlapShot says:

I knew it was on. Good thing I was out picking up last minute items for thanksgiving, because I wasn’t gonna watch it anyway.

Very happy knowing that it bombed, couldn’t happen to a better person.

  5. Mauser says:

I didn’t even know it was scheduled. And for once, I think the Times was insightful and right.

  6. Kushin Los says:

My dad was going to watch it with my grandma last night until I pointed out that Bones was going to be on at the same time.
