I look at it this way – we don’t demand that the original actor who portrayed Kate stick around and keep playing the same role in ‘Taming of the Shrew’, over and over again. And contemporary stagings of that play are not at all faithful to the way they did it in the Globe.

And it’s only Star Trek, not Shakespeare.

I’m looking forward to this.

This is because Hollywood is no longer run by anyone with any creativity, but instead by Accountants. Accountants are risk averse, and therefore only want to spend money on “Proven” properties. Thus all the re-makes and sequels.

One of the many reasons why I’m so angry with Hollywood. Here, I have a completely original idea (my book) and yet it goes unnoticed by publishers and such. Yes…I’m bitter. LOL

But seriously, I heard they’re going to make a new Karate Kid movie with Wil Smith’s son. UGH.

I agree with Bob – Hollywood screen writers are as unimaginitive as can be. When new TV shows are based on news stories from a few months ago and movies are based on old TV shows, its a wonder these people survive.

How funny that you brought this up today! My son and I were watching the “Get Smart” movie last night (which, to me was just OK) and he made the comment that all Hollywood seems to be able to do is remake what was great in the first place and make it bad (in most cases). I have to agree. That being said, we are looking forward to seeing the new Star Trek movie – hopefully it won’t be awful!

I will withhold judgment.

There was a LOT of consternation about the Battlestar Galactica re-imagining, and it turned out far better than the source material while remaining true to the spirit of the story. (Even Richard Hatch agrees.)

Let’s see what they do before we decide how much we’re going to hate it.

Problem is that the Star Wars movies (episodes 1-3) had ALREADY been planned out by Lucas when he originally wrote the story, so the content IS canon. Also, the 1997 re-release in theaters was of a REMASTERED version with added scenes and effects, and enhanced sound.

This Trek film will portray the original crew of the NCC 1701 with different faces.

I personally cannot accept that ANYONE except Shatner would portray James Tiberius Kirk. Same with Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy, portrayed by DeForrest Kelley who died several years ago.

I could go on. A remake is never as good as the originals. For instance, they could have made a movie about the Dominion War, which was only covered partly because during those events the series was focused on DS9.

Or they could simply go between The Original Series and The Next Generation. there IS an 80 year gap in there.

Many Trek fans, myself included, are upset that they’re changing canon with this re-make. Spock, not half human?! Forget it!

I love the digital re-tooling of TOS though! That’s awesome!

Yerah, being a Trek fan myself i was rather appalled when I learned the 2009 Trek film was simply a retelling of The Original Series.

Especially since Brannon Bragga and Rick Berman added a wealth of content to this entire universe… there was a heck of a lot more worth making than a simple remake…
