Nancy Pelosi won’t take the time to allow her Congress to vote for domestic oil drilling, but she may take it upon herself to do something no American politician has ever done: formally apologize to the Japanese for our use of the atomic bombs that ended their aggression in World War II.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is set this week to be the highest-ranking sitting US official to visit the site of the Hiroshima atomic bombing, which bitterly divides opinion six decades later.
No sitting US president or vice president has ever paid respects to the dead of the US nuclear attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945, a sore point for many survivors in Japan.
While I’ve been referred to as “Miss Cleo”, may I predict that should Pelosi apologize, she’ll probably disregard the imperialist invasions Japan conducted against her neighbors, the hundreds of thousands of people killed and enslaved by that aggression, and the fact that after our defeat of Japan, the United States left her a free nation today. A fate she would have denied those annexed.
I lived there for three years and the Japanese people are the most courteous I’ve ever encountered. But as simplistic as it may sound, they need to let this go. Re-opening old wounds will do nothing but revive memories of the murderous, expansionist legacy of Imperial Japan.
Nancy Pelosi should know better, but that’s also asking a lot.

She should be removed from office if she goes through with this. I’m sick of the whining the libs and the Japanese have engaged in over the use of those two bombs. Hell, those two bombs saved the lives of millions, both allied and Japanese.
Hirohito had every opportunity to surrender and didnt.
Maybe we should apologize to the Japanese for Nancy Pelosi.
Oh, and by the way, maybe she should stop by Korea and see how they feel about us dropping the bombs which not only ended the war but also freed Korea from Japan rule.
Makes me glad I’m one of the “stupid” uneducated women.
Shouldn’t she have done this a few weeks ago? You know, during the actual anniversary of the bombings? I’m questioning the timing…
Well, she got away with meeting an enemy nation leader wearing her burqa scarf, didn’t she?
She gonna havta pay for all this someday, meanwhile she keeps piling it on.
Well Nerd, some in the Japanese Army were willing to kill Hirohito to keep him from recording the surrender broadcast.
It was a necessity that my have ended up saving the entire Japanese race. It has been estimated that had the United States and her allies invaded the islands that there would have been those who would have strapped on bombs and kamikazed instead of accepting loss. This doesn’t even get into things like the supposed Japanese A-bomb (my one source which I need to go looking for again stated that it either was close to being finished or had just been and never used with little documentation surviving) or the one group back in he 60s/70s that held a government building hostage demanding the reinstatement of the Emperor to power and return of samurai/WW2 Army ways (I think it ended with a mass suicide).
That having been said, it was an unfortunate necessity that any rational individual wishes never needed to have happened. The facts being as they are, we may never have had to have worried about the Germans, but the Japanese were someone we needed to at the time.
Also I enjoyed Japan when I lived there 1994-7. I’ve been back once since then in 2002 and hope to see it again in the future.
