Edwards: Blacks "all going to be in prison or dead"

During Thursday night’s MTV/MySpace Presidential Dialogue candidate John Edwards said,

“We cannot build enough prisons to solve this problem. And the idea that we can keep incarcerating and keep incarcerating — pretty soon we’re not going to have a young African-American male population in America. They’re all going to be in prison or dead. One of the two.”

edwards.jpgDoesn’t sound like Edwards is giving us much wiggle room.

Tell ya what, John. Some of us are really trying to raise our young black males properly. Despite how valuable President Clinton assumed “Midnight Basketball” would be for our young men, my son is at home by midnight on weekends. Some of us parents know that nothing good happens on the street, that late, for children of any ethnic background.

Regardless of what you think or say, Mr. Edwards, all young African-American males are not going to wind up in prison or dead. But thanks for falling for the insulting, stereotypical, and inaccurate impressions your Hollywood buddies create for public consumption. And thanks John, for spitting on parents who are doing the right thing by our kids, and our kids who are doing the right thing.
