All children need three things in order to thrive:
Structure...rules
Discipline...adherence to the rules
unconditional love...regardless of how they behave.

I am glad this is working! It is very hard to raise a teenage boy. Mine was just as bad and I had a tough time of it because i was a single mom and his father passed away when he was about 11 years old so I really was on my own. I was very tough on him and as soon as he turned 18 and graduated from high school, I booted him out. Of course the guilt was terrible, but I did go find an apartment for him that was less than a mile from the house and I constantly harped on him to make sure he paid all of his own bills. I do sometimes help him out financially but not much. It was really hard to do, but It made him more responsible.
Being a parent is one of the most difficult jobs in the world but it has its rewards.

Rules do work, but the mind of a teenager really doesn't compute sometimes so you always have to end up sounding like a broken record, but in the end, they grow up and they do remember why they love you.

I do remember my kids telling me I was the MEANEST mother in the whole world. I would tell them they "ain't seen nothing yet, I could get meaner if they wanted me to" ... Well i guess raising good children is worth being "mean".

Bob

I have seen a couple of your posts about this young man in the short time I have been following your blog.

I am sorry you are having to do all this late intervention. Junior needs to understand the impacts of his actions, not in just a carrot and stick perspective, but how it works on all those around him.

As an outside observer with only the smallest of insight that you have given, it seems the new female figure in his life has done what the prior should have done 12 or so years ago.

It's all about self discipline and doing the right thing.

Making it quite understandable why his mother had less than zero chance of having peaceful coexistence with him.
